The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

Thanks for sharing! I'll bet (hope?) things have changed a bit for the miners and processors since then.

I have a chunk of galena ore. If anyone is interested i could post a couple of pics. I had a coworker who is a serious rock hound and gifted it to me. Note. When a rock hound gifts you galena ore don't mention turning it into boolits.

I grew up about 40 miles east of Galena, IL where a substantial percentage of the lead sent downrange by the Union Army was mined. At one time, Jo Davies County had more working mines (lead, zinc, and fluorite) in operation than all the remaining Illinois counties combined. Most of the mines were closed down by the time I hunted deer in those hills but, given access to the property, I could still probably locate one or two of the sites on the old Lightner farm.

When I was very young, a common kit for kids to assemble and play with was a crystal radio, the one with a wire coil for tuning. It used a chunk of galena as the signal detector. Power was provided by the carrier wave of the transmitting radio station. You had to use earphones to hear anything.
