Success with a 7x57 Remington Roller and cast bullets.

I have had this rifle for 2 plus years, and only shot it with a few jacketed loads and it did all right. I recently cast some 168 gr, GC on them, .286 with my alloy, and sized and lube them to .285 with Lyman Orange magic lube, thru a heated 450. I loaded up 5 with 21.6 grs of 5744, with best load in my Lyman manual of 20.00 grains to be exact. I settled in on the bags and put the 2" orange on top of my post front sight and squeezed one off, looked thru my spotter and confirmed it hit about 1" over my front post. I had also set my sights, for 400yds, which I find most rifles need to be set 150-200 yds high for cast bullets in the 1500-1700 fps zone. The next 4 formed a nice even circle about 2.5 inches. I was very pleased to that the rifle shot this good, but everything I had read about them, said they had a bigger bore, and that seems to be the case. Recoil is nice, but crisp. This rifle is in very, verygyood shape, retaining 90% of the blue and about 100% of case colors, and the bore is mint, no wear, nor corrosion, nice and bright. The wood looks like a military rifle should, with some dings, but it had been coarse sanded and dipped in linseed oil looks like, and the finish seems to be original. The fella I had gotten it off of in New York said it was his grand dads and he had inherited it from him, and he had no use for it. He also told me his grand dad had worked nearly 50 years at Remington. That might explains the rifles great condition.I ended up loading 100 of them after seeing that they shot as good as they did. I need to try them In a 7x57 98 I am finishing building, and my 7x57 Rolling Block I am also finishing up, as my retirement rifle. I may be shooting this in a upcoming match on the first Saturday of May here in KY, called the Victorian Rifle match, and has 3 different classes, Muzzle loading rifles and smooth bores, Single shot rifles and bolt actions, with all rifles being made between 1830-1910. I have a 96 Swede for the bolt action match, and a 12.7x44R that shoots good also for the single shots. Just thought I would share.

The 7x57 Mauser is one of my favourite cast bullet cartridges for sheer ease of tuning for accuracy and consistant results. My rifle is a military FN mauser with nice deep rifling and pristine bore. Using the RCBS 145gn Silhouette boolit also sized to 0.285" over 29gn of 3031, it prints an enomous number of bulls on the target.

7x57 is a great medium game cartridge, too. Keep up the good work!

I need to find sights for mine. My grand uncle bought a barreled action out of a barrel in a gun shop many decades ago. About 40 years ago I found the wood and missing metal parts except for the aforementioned sights. I haven’t looked at it for years, but I believe everything else it there, and it had a decent bore. This thread has me thinking about it once again.

Tseaha, you should clean your barrel back to bright steel, removing all copper and lead, then slug the barrel to determine what size bullets you need. If anyone is going to barter with you, you want bullets that are sized to your groove diameter, that have at least a chance of shooting well in your rifle.
You might use a .308 cast soft bullet for sizing in the 7mm, using case lube.

because i luv my 9.3x57 in Husqvarna m46.

    i have 3 7x57 sporterized rifles, 16 Spanish, 08 Brazilian and a 24/30 Venezuelan mausers.

my oldest son has a custom FN 98 mauser in 7x57, i should have never gave it to him.

    i have a sporterized 98 mauser(1944) in 8x57.

i have another 16 Spanish, but i re-barreled her to 6.5x55. that will be given to youngest son ( https://castboolits.gunloads.com/new...2255&noquote=1 ).

    i have 3 sporterized 91 Argentina mausers in 7.65x53.

i also have a 95 Chilean mauser action.

    i have a problem, don't i?

The only problem is that the '95 Chilean Mauser action isn't built into a sporter yet!

I don't see any problem.. I was just teasin'.

Unless my memory fails me, several years ago it was you who pointed out to me what looked to be a nice Mod. 46 on Simpson's. It was, I'm grateful and it resides in my safe and yeah, I get the whole 9.3 X 57 thing!!!!

    I had a 7 X 57R in a Meffert drilling but never took anything with it. My current 7mm is a 7 X 64 Brenneke in a Wilhelm Brenneke 98 Mauser....with a 28 inch barrel!
