    Holy Toledo !!!!

This is a list of endless options. And this is my favorite
subject since I jumped into casting boolits.

    My T/C Contender carbine in 30-30 gives me lots of versatility;
from 48 gr round ball, Ideal 3118 115 gr FP, Sierra 125 gr FNHP,
150's and 170's cast and jacketed, even spitzers. All that and
pert near at any velocity I want.

    Can the OP's grandson operate a Contender ? I'll bet he's
    gonna find out.

The only drawback to 30-30 here in Ohio is it's not
deer legal. Enter the Henry .357 single shot, a close
second in versatility, albeit a little heavy. (They come
    with sling studs, ya know.)

For me, this is what it's all about.

I found a gun from a member here. A Remington#2 originally in .32 rim fire but converted to center fire. Bad bore but reasonably tight action. It is the stronger non-takedown model.

It is with John Taylor right now being relined to .32 S&W Long. It's just about perfect for my needs. I weighed it with wood attached. It weighs five lbs, five and a half ounces.

Sounds like you are talking about a Remington no. 4 instead of the no. 2. ? Good Luck with the project !

Was the #4 ever made for .38 S&W? I know the Hopkins & Allen Junior was.

No, I think it is a #2. For two reasons. The #4 is a cut down boys rifle. Short barrel, short butt stock and no lower tang. Mine has a 26" barrel, adult size stocks, and a lower tan like the #1.

I think the #2 is more suitable for my use.

I have never seen one made for .38 S&W. They were, however, chambered for .38-40 and .44-40.

Love the Henry single shot rifles, need to add the .357/.38 to the .45-70. Glad they finally fixed the trigger pull.

I had John Taylor do a 20", .38 S&W barrel to fit my pre-WW1 H&R .44 Garden Gun. He used a Green Mountain 9mm gunsmith special barrel in 10" twist with rifle type throat. I get 700 fps with 240-grain Accurate 36-240H bullet with 3 grains of Autocomp and this load zaps through EIGHT 1-gallon water jugs like a laser without tumbling. Just the ticket for mastadons invading your garden vegetable patch. Also fine grouping with ordinary .38 S&W handgun ammo. Very quiet like standard velocity .22LR so no can needed. Ideal Poacher's Pet which is quite suitable for converting old British rook rifles with soft iron actions to use a readily available, low-pressure smokeless cartridge. There are no factory +P loads for .38 S&W. Factory 146 LRN gives about 750 fps in a rechambered rook rifle. Just tickety boo!

That reminds me - I've got a couple of 18" 9mm blanks somewhere, one of which would do famously on a small action. Tomorrow I'll have at mount an expedition to the attic.

The Rossi single shots are a bit heavy but I'm really enjoying mine after a little work.
I cut and threaded the barrel to fit a suppressor, .38spl really is proper quiet now with no more felt recoil than a .22WMR.

The stocks are very chunky, next plan is to slim them quite a bit but in the meantime I'm having too much fun shooting it

I'm lucky. I have 2 versions of the walking around rifle that go with me when heading into the woods.

The first is a late 50's early 60's H&R in 30-30 on the lightweight frame and barrel. I've taken everything from deer with full power 311041 boolit loads to pests with 115gr 32-20 cast and 5.0 grs of Bullseye.

The second is an NEF in 357 magnum with a 20 inch barrel (no sights- 2x7 scope). With 38 special wadcutters and 2.7 grs Bullseye it's an awsome small game round. Full power 357 mag loads with 158 gr XTPs will handle coyotes, bobcats, and deer if needed. I also have an original H&R 357 Maximum barrel, but it's 24" long and not as packable as the 357 magnum.

Cheers mate, yup its a dang nice place to live with plenty of small game, goats, hogs and deer kicking around as well.

180gr XTPS certainly do the job

At present I have a 11 inch 357 mag. insert for a 16 gauge barrel. It is fun to shoot but it is slow to reload and the combo is too heavy for much walking around.

I posted this on another thread but is should have gone here.: "I've been thinking about a 18" 357 mag. barrel for my Contender. I acquired an extra screw-in choke for the Contender pistol barrels years ago and wonder if it would be usable on a rifle barrel. For a walk-around gun the option of using shot for close in duty is tempting."

Agree with this plus they do offer youth stocks as well.

Just an idea for the OP if he is still around. If you reload, the .45-70 can be surprisingly easy to shoot and still very effective. I load my Henry with 12.5 grains Unique under a 300 grain lead slug and it is honestly the easiest shooting centerfire rifle I own other than my .223's. It gets around 1200 fps which is .44 Magnum power level and will kill anything around here.
    Currently casting and loading: .32 Auto, .380 Auto, .38 Special, 9X19, .357 Magnum, .257 Roberts, 6.5 Creedmoor, .30 WCF, .308 WCF, .45-70.

Ferguson: Do you use a Dacron puff or any other type of filler with that small charge of Unique? GF

You may be sorry if you use dacron fiber. At low pressures it can melt rather than burn, and when it does it bonds tenaciously to everything in sight. The only solvent that will even touch it is MEK. Trust me, I know. Much, much better is kapok, which is a vegetable fiber and burns to nothing at any pressure. Easy to buy on evilBay or even Amazon.
