    Lyman 31L M die

I have a 30-30 Marlin and have some lead boolits for it that have been sized to .310. They are big ol 150 grain flat nosed boolits with a large hollow point. I do not want the case neck to size down the boolits any or cause problems. My questions is: Does anyone know what the stem dimensions are on the 31L Lyman M die? I am looking for some way to expand the neck to as close to .310 as I can get without over expanding. Help! james

Mine is marked 31R and the shank portion measures .309 and the portion at the top that bells the mouth is .3135. Hope this helps.

If it’s gas checked, the gas check resists swaging.

That's good to know, I never used gas checks for my older black powder rifles, so I really have no experience with them. Thanks for the info, james

I also use the 31R (on a 300 BLK) and a .308 jacketed bullet will push into the neck by hand with almost no or minimal resistance, so the ID of the brass should be between 0.309 and 0.3095.

My .3095-0.310" bullets seat with a good amount of tension.

Go ahead and use the gas check in 30-30 with the Marlin Micro Groove rifling ...
it will make life a lot more easier ... the micro-groove rifling is hard enough to work with ...
Not using the gas check is like swimming with a concrete block tied around your neck .

Thanks for info and suggestions. I rummaged around in my reloading stuff and finally found a Lyman 31L expander that I had forgot about having. I think I am now good to go. I am looking forward to warm weather . james
