    Hornady modified case thread size?

    Hello all!
I am in need of a Hornady style modified case for a 38-55 chambered rifle. I have noticed Hornady does not offer one. Does anyone know the thread size they use and where I might purchase an appropriate tap? Or does anyone here tap a fired case for others?
    Thanks for your help,
    Rick

5/16x36 I use a once fired case from the gun I aam going to use it for.
you will have to expand the mouth of the case to get a slip fit on the bullet

Thank you so much. I intend to use a once fired case in the rifle I will use it for.
    Thanks again,
    Rick

I hate old geezer memory, I thought it was a 5/16-28. Now I'm going to have to go and check the tap I bought off Amazon to make case length gauges that Hornady doesn't make.

5/16″ – 36 tpi Right Hand is correct.

Memory ain't that bad, just problems with my copying skills.

Pulled out the box the tap is in, it's clearly written(in my handwriting) on top of the box 5/16-28. Pull the tap out and read what is actually on the tap:5/16-36.

Of course it took a 10x loupe to read what was on the tap. Musta just used the 7x when I wrote the note on the box.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I have a new 5/16 x 36 tap I bought from Amazon. It will only thread into one of my modified cases about a turn and a half. The threads in my Hornady cases sure seem to look more course than my 36tpi tap.
Can we please re-visit this subject as I think 28tpi is going to be correct.
I tried the tap in a few cases with the same result in each.
    Thanks,
    Rick

All mine are the earlier Stoney Point version. They are 5/16 × 36. I have done a bunch for others and the 5/16x 36 has worked for both versions.

Dug out my Hornady case gage and my tap. Tap is clearly 5/16-36.

That said, I have two factory tapped cases, one a 6 BR, second a .243. Both thread on to the case gage with no problems.

The 6 BR I can only thread the tap in about a turn and a half.

On the .243, the tap threads into the case like a champ.

My guess is some of the factory threaded case gages are a very tight fit.

You've got the tap, try it on any case to see if it will thread onto the gage.

    Good luck.

I solved the question about the thread by making my own tools and used 1/4"x28. (I like to make or modify things and that was a thing. Or two. )
