ID:	296378Picked up this little feller at a funshow this past weekend. Didn’t necessarily need it, but it followed me home to keep the other molds company.

Anyway, I ran it’s mold number , a “Lyman 429459”, and could not find it on my mold number chart. So I did a regular net search, nadda. Came here and did the same search….nadda.

Now I’m seriously curious as to what I have here. It doesn’t look all that special, but maybe it is??

Anyone with superior enlightenment know what this little guy is?

ID:	296379I’ll get back out to the work shop and snap a few pics. It looks like any other Lyman mold. It just goes full ghost when you try to find the mold number anywhere. I was just curious as to what weight range it is suppose to drop.

That's interesting. #459 was the cherry number for the .41 Mag Keith bullet. That's not a 410459 profile. The blocks are clearly stamped but in the old lettering of the old Ideal moulds with a current Lyman name on it. The HP pin assembly does not look like a Lyman or Ideal pin assy. Looks more like a more recently made design. I guess it measures somewhere in the vicinity of .429? Weight? Have to wait and see.
Only thing I can suggest is that Lyman started to make a mould out of old Ideal stock, found that it was already stamped, scrapped it and someone bought it out of scrap and had a mould made to their specs for it. 10 or 15 years ago, several mould makers would recut blocks. It's a pretty fair looking design. Give it a go. For sure you have a curiosity and a real headscratcher there./beagle

    Greetings,

I looked in my old Lyman books with no success.

Interesting to note that it is cut with a square grease groove.

Grandpa has some older books. I will look next visit to see if it is listed there.

    Cheers,

    Dave

The bullet almost resembles the 429360 Gordon Boser bullet. If the Keith HP bullets were one digit off, 358429 = 358439. Maybe this was an experimental request that never hit the catalog. The number sure is puzzling.

Huh, who would have thunk this would turn out to be a real mystery!
I’m very inspired to fire up a pot and pour me some now! I’ll post pics of what this baby drops.

    Greetings,

This must be a rare find.

I found a list of Lyman Cherry numbers and "238" is not listed. 237 and 239 are listed.

Just for grins, have you cast any bullets yet?

What is the actual diameter as cast?

My first guess was that it is a 410459 miss marked.

    Cheers,

    Dave

The business end of the pin sure doesn't look like a Lyman hollow point pin. It may have been cut down, or a totally new home made (I mean high dollar custom) one.

From what I remember, most Lyman HP pins were meant to displace about 15 grains of lead: the 250 grain 429421 became the 235 grain 429421HP, etc. I don't think that one will, but we wont know until you cast and weigh a few.

No idea on why it has a standard Lyman cherry number for another design.

I wonder if this is something from Lyman R&D, that worked out great, samples went home with Lab Techs, and Sales figured they profit margins weren’t high enough for mass production. If so, you’ve struck gold.

The 238 number is the number assigned to each half of the mould blocks to keep them together in manufacturing. Should be the same number on both sides./beagle

The square grease groove would put it in the Elmer Keith design , #459 is from 410459 220 gr. SWC which is a 220 gr. 41 magnum ???

Cast a few and weigh and measure , looks like a round nose / hollow point ...

    Looking at chart I see three round nose 429 moulds : # 429383-245 gr . RN / # 429384- 241 gr. RN / and # 429478- 210 gr, RN .
Do you think it could be one of these three ? I'm having trouble seeing the details , someone with better eyesight needs to eyeball them for me .
To me the likely prospect is #429383 (245 gr. RN) ..OR ... #429384 (241 gr. RN)
I can't tell the difference between these two .

Yup, we sure did get some of that…. Power stayed on. Had plenty of firewood to burn. Had our bread and milk. We were ready for it.
