    Oil proof markers

I bought a bunch of plastic bottles with needle like openings, so I can use less oil than what usually comes out of a pump type oil can. They work well and I’m very satisfied, however, I need a way to mark the different ones. I started using Sharpies, but quickly found out that it didn’t resist the oils. How can I mark plastic bottles so I know which is which?
    Thanks

You can use a sharpie (or better yet the markers designed to write on cattle ear tags) and go over your marks with clear fingernail polish.

    I used nail polish.
It I guess is some form of Acrylic paint.
But available and cheap where you are not going to use it every day.
Plus you can get it in lots of colors for easy reference.

Different colored yarns, tied around the neck under the cap.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

I had the same issue, so I just made a label and used wide tape to tape over it, making sure it wrapped all the way around.

I made the paper labels for oil cans then the clear packing tape over them. If possible leave some over hang top and bottom on the clear tape so it seals the edges.

At work every container had to be labeled with contents and MSD number. there we made a wire ring to go under the cap and a id button hung from it. these had the msd on one side and name on other hanging from a single wire link. They could be removed easily when the cap was off.

Most of the new plastics marker paint nail polishes wont adhere to well and will flake off easily. If the plastic is thick enough and your hand steady enough tattooing it into the surface might work.

Sharpie (the real ones) doesn’t hold up, at least with cutting oil. I wonder if the adhesive on tape can. Nail polish is an interesting idea. Maybe acrylic paint. I need to try one of my white markers. I think they are acrylic.

I’ve been wondering, can you still find the old fashioned oil cans that you just pushed the bottom in to get a bit of oil?

Grainger sells “paint markers” that are used for industrial labeling.

Just mark the shelf where you set them. You know you will never get them mixed up

If you have a set of letter stamps you could make a tag to tape or hang from the bottles. Little overkill but cans are cheap and that would be where I would source my tag material.

You know, junk yards back in the day used some kind of yellow markers/paint things that stayed for ever. You had to scrape that stuff off. I have no idea what it was, but maybe this post above tells the tale.

Markal Paint sticks - used those when I worked in a steel warehouse. They will write on oiled sheet metal but you will waste a lot sharpening it to write on small items.

The clear nail polish basically seals the edges of the tap and keeps the oil from penetrating. Or if used an over coat just makes a nice clear coat. Nothing seams to hurt acrylic

I've got a couple of Sharpie Pro markers that are supposedly able to write on oily surfaces. I haven't tried them on anything that had more than a little oil on it, but do know that the ink is a bear to remove from plastic containers!
If you search Amazon for "Sharpie Pro Permanent Marker, Fine Point, Black Marker (2018321)" you can get a look at the specs. They run about $5.50 for the fine point version on there.
