Accurate 2460 in 30-30 with Lyman 311041

Anyone ever used this combo and had decent results? I've loaded a fair amount of plinker loads for the 30-30 but need to come up with something to use in a lever gun silhouette match. This is about the only powder I have in quantity for such a task. Not wanting to waste components at this time trying something useless so figured I'd ask before diving in.

I know there's better powders for the 30-30 but I just don't have them in quantity to play with right now.

I do have a fair amount of 2400, perhaps that would be better than 2460?

I've burned allot of AA2230 in the 30-30 Win. (2460's slightly faster sister)
2400 will serve you best for medium velocity loads.
AA2460 will serve you well for full power loads.

Your plinker load should take the chickens and pigs , maybe the turkeys too a d save the heavy load for the rams .Just to give you a idea I run a lee 150FN over 8.0 gr of Unique for C&P and then 20.5 of IMR4198 under a Lyman 311041 for T & R . That load will take down body hit rams . The unique load will take down the turkeys if I hit them , next match that the wind is calm I'm planning on getting some solid sight settings for the Unique load for the turkeys . It might save my shoulder at least 10 rounds of thumping .

30 grains of 2460 under your 311-041 will give you a pretty good load for rams. I personally had better luck with WW-748 when I was shooting Lever Action Silhouette. The Rams at West End were pretty hard set.

For chickens, pigs and turkeys, I used a 311-465 and 17.5 grains of 2400.

AA 2460 is pretty close to the same as Win 748, maybe the same(?). Lyman CBHs #3 and #4 along with reloading manuals 49th and 50th have data for 748 in the 30-30 with the 311041. Start at the "start" load and work up.

Turkeys are not hard to knock over, if you can get a heavy bullet on them.
I use a 311041 out to 150m at low velocity, and I have to crank up a lot of elevation clicks to get there. I use 4198 for ram loads also.

I was using single based AA 2495 26.0 grains with the 31141 (weighs about 183 grains with gc) and rechecking published loads due to a temp 2495 powder 49shortage, noted that AA 2460 gave almost exactly (+- 7fps) the same velocity per grain for almost all 30-30 cast bullet loads loads despite it being a double based powder. However the substitution of 26 2460 resulted in hits over a foot higher than 2475 at the same sight setting at the rams at 200 yds/meters despite comparable accuracy. Suspect it might be due to the nitro component giving a faster burn/recoil impulse.

No matches yet. Will be going to the range next month to do some tests on loads. Match won't be until June that I can make.

Larry: Last time shortages a few tears i mean years ago, needed to feed a mini 14. Ran out of 748 and the only thing available was 2460 in the jug. I gave it a shot hahahh, but couldn't get reliable function at max. Called their Ballistician & discussed it & said it was safe to shoot a few grains over but i lost accuracy above that. I'm still using it but wouldn't bet my life on it in the .223 so now i'm stuck with about 4 lbs of it.

Agree - I knock Chickens over with subsonic #311008 (5 gns Unique), Pigs and Turkeys with subsonic 163 gn PB (5.5 gns Unique), and about to go to #311041 w/o gas check (6 gns Unique for subsonic). Pigs are tougher than Turkeys. With #311041, 17 gns of 2207 (H4198) is very accurate and good for everything up to and including Turkeys. Rams need extra - 170 gns (NOT 150 gns) at 1900 fps plus. That's 30 gns #748 in my rifle, if you are running off Larry's info on similarity to 2460. I actually use 2206H (H4895) and 2208 (Varget) for Rams, but no use to you if you don't have it.

In my old 1948 vintage Marlin 336, I shot everything but rams, with a Lee 120 grain GC on top of 11 gr of unique. For rams I used a Lee clone of 311041, on top of 30 something grains of 748.
