Don’t do it. There is negligible affect on recoil.

If you want to reduced recoil, get a good recoil pad or reduction device.

Agree 100 percent with Don here.

You could also consider whether a lighter, low-recoil load might serve your purpose.

I forgot to add. It will reduce the value of your gun.

Let me ask what advantage porting the barrel would give you.

I have a 500A that has a ported cylinder bore barrel, and the porting works very well, with hotter loads. The rifled slug barrel is ported as well, and that porting works.

In both scenarios where the porting was an advantage, the loads were high brass, high velocity loads, and the advantage was in rapid fire, it was fast to re acquire the sights and follow up shots were much more accurate. There is no reduction in recoil, porting just reduces the amount of muzzle rise.

Porting a barrel that is for other purposes than rapid fire, with full power loads, wouldn't yield such good results as the porting is directly reciprocal of the power of the shells used. Low power = not much gas pressure for the ports, the effect of the port is greatly diminished.

glad i asked i already shoot a light hand load and 3/4oz of shot. Recoil is light use 2 recoil pads to lenghten the stock not recoil reduction

thanx guys !! turtlezx over and out

as a die hard trapshooter i can tell you that you will not notice any difference in recoil. if you can go on the trapshooters.com site you will see . only negative replys about porting. the only benifit of porting is for those that charge money doing it

Amen to both. I have one and recoil reduction is less than I can notice. It was a waste of $40.

The only shotgun I had ported I sent to Pro Port . Remington 1100, 12 gauge skeet gun with a 34” full choke barrel I put on to shoot trap with. Not much recoil to begin with, but there is hardly any recoil now. In my opinion, it made a difference.
I firmly believe that you should only get treated by how you act, not by who or what you are!!

    Drill porting, Never.

Mag-na-Ports " Pro-Port" works & makes less noise. I have it on a Citori 3" 12 ga. For target loads, do bottom barrel only. The factory ports on Mossberg slug gun helps a LOT. Have one.

My S&W M29. 44 mag is Mag na Ported. Works well. Can rapid fire double action with it.

Felt recoil can be reduced by adding recoil pad & adding weight.

Porting will NOT increase guns value. In fact, value may go down on vintage models.

I have BT 99 Browning that's ported and it's bar-none the best shooting trap gun I've ever shot. I've gone 100 straight with it many times...

On a shotgun bore Drill porting is viable as smoothing out the burrs is pretty easy with a hone. Even on a rifle bore when I drill a gas port, drill undersize and ream to final diameter to minimize the burr. Even if there is a small one, a few fired rounds knock it right off.

Before drilling, fill bore with Cerrosafe chamber cast alloy. Help reduce the burr.
