    The surest way is with a reverse osmosis system. Probably more expensive than other other systems, but the surest. Sinking a well is a start, but you should still get it checked for dangerous chemicals.

    You are right on this . unless there is going be a sure sign that the surface water is not good. Then you will need a drilled well below the ledge . I use to work for some water well company and was a helper on the rig and also done service and installer and also a helper to put in shallow well with 2 1/2 " pipe for water to house and the water came out good. The deepest you can go with a hand pump is 20ft. and drive in 5 ft lenghts at a time and just add on as you go if you do not hit water . After you hit water , you will see what sand you have and then put in your screen you drive to the bottom and then you take 1" pipe with a foot valve on it and then your pump on top on a stand and prime and use , Use a 1" pipe in the 2 1/2" to get the dirt out of the pipe with water being pump into the pipes . that way your 2 1/2 " is dose not get pluged up .
