    .350 Rem Mag loads

So, I have a Remingto XP-100 centergrip with a custom 15" bull barrel chambered in .350 Rem Mag on it's way to me for hunting deer here in Iowa. It's a round that's intrigued me since I was a teenager, but never really had a good excuse to NEED one. Now with Iowa's change to permitting bottleneck cartridges sending projectiles from .350"-.500" in diameter, now I have a good excuse.
I've got lots of experience with the .357 Max and a Ranch Dog 359-190 RFGC mold that throws great bullets and has been great on deer. (also 148 WC and 158 gr. Keith PB molds) My daughter has claimed that T/C Encore and we're tired of sharing a pistol. So I've wanted to get back into the XP-100 again after having loved one in 7BR 25 years ago. But I don't find much data on it, especially for cast boolits. My Lyman Cast Bullet handbook is very scarce on data and I don't find cast data anywhere else. The cartridge isn't more than I can handle in a handgun, but it's more than I NEED, so I want to load it down a bit. My other bullet option is the Speer 180 gr. Hot Cor, of which I have several hundred. I've run my Ranch Dog bullet at just under 2000 fps with great success in the Max and I wouldn't mind duplicating that performance with the .350 Rem Mag. I've got a good powder selection - Blue Dot, 5774, 4227, 2400, Varget, IMR 4350, H380, RL15, 7828, RL7, N133, AA1680, H110 (likely not applicable here), Unique, Red Dot, Green Dot, 700X.
Who has experience with this round that can advise a bit on the cast boolit side? I've got enough data for jacketed.
    Thanks!

The old Lyman 45th Edition lists some cast loads for the 350 Rem Mag using a Rem 600 18.5" barrel which isn't too far from what you have.
    Lyman 358315 206gr #2 alloy:
    Unique 14.0 start 1522fps 18.0 max 1760fps
    IMR 4227 29.0 1776fps. 33.0 2004fps
    IMR 4198 39.0 2032 fps. 42.0 2164fps
    IMR 3031 41.0 1805fps. 50.0 2298fps
    Accuracy load Unique 18.0gr

    Lyman 358318 247gr #2 alloy
    Unique 13.0 start 1348fps. 17.0 max 1587fps
    IMR 4198 37.0 1876fps. 40.0 2036fps
    IMR 3031 40.0 1789fps. 48.0 2169fps
    Accuracy load Unique 17.0gr

Lyman 47th adds a few more fast burning powders for the 358315:
    Red Dot start 10.0 1270fps. max 14.5 1535fps
    700X. 10.0. 1280fps 14.5 1540fps
    Green Dot 11.0. 1315fps. 15.5. 1620fps

That should be QUITE the handful!!! I have seen a couple of Remington Custom Shop XP-100s in .350 but never shot one.... It is however my favorite hunting round for under 300 yards...

As to bullets, have tried quite a few jacketed but no cast as I save those for the .358 Winchester in a 16.5" Frontier.

The MP Molds 220 grain that has HP pins is extremely accurate and should do the job at 1900 fps.

Just saw this article the other day and it also looks like a very versatile bullet...

I would not bother with any jacketed .35 caliber rifle bullet as even the lightest ones have a hard time expanding at 2k fps... About the only reliable one I have read about is the 200 grain Remington CoreLoc for the .35 Remington.

In a jacketed pistol bullet, Nosler suggested their 180 grain Partition but don't think they are available any more. I believe Swift does have their A-Frame in .35 pistol format...

Thanks for the info. I've been using the Speer Hot Cor 180 gr. bullets out of my .357 Maximum for the last couple of years. Great performance on game from 50 yards to 186 yards. That would be my first jacketed bullet choice, but I think I'll be best off with my 190 gr. Ranch Dog to begin with a finding a good medium range.

for my Remington Model 7 I loaded a Hornady 200gr spire point bullet with 60gr of BL-C(2) and a magnum primer. It put 5 rounds into almost the same hole very consistently. It was listed as the max load. With the Sierra 225gr Game King I was using W748. The load was 58.5gr, federal 215 match primer.
The 200gr load shot at like 2800fps and the 225gr was around 2700fps.

My little 600 is a favorite with 225 Partitions and 2230 at 2700, but that doesn't read like the load you want nor need.

Closer is my Lee 200s (208 in my alloy) at 2100 with 3031 from the same Lyman data that's posted above. This load mimics the 35 Remington - as fine a deer round as ever put venison on a table. The same bullet without the gascheck and only 9grs of Unique (below book minimum use at your own risk) is a fun plinking load. Your Ranchdog 190 could do each at least as well.

35 Whelen and 350 Rem Mag have nearly identical case capacities, so this data should work fine, starting low and working up. 5744 is made for low case fill, so you can safely start even below the listed starting loads and work up to a given velocity. Data is for 24" barrels, so you may lose 300 fps or so with your shorter tube. Only a chronograph will tell.

In the 35 Whelen Imp (as noted, very similar capacity), I liked the 358 232 NEI (Sorry these are the only markings on mold, cast my alloy, checked, lubed it weighed 252 gr) w/ IMR 3031 for plinking & offhand practice loads. WLR, 36-41 gr were all OK, some charges better than others.
I do see that you do not list that powder in your stock though, so maybe that doesn't help.

In jacketed bullet loads of similar weight for the 35 Whelen Imp (but higher pressure & velocity) I have used RL 15, RL 17, I4064, I4007 (gone now), H100V, H4895, XMR4350, FSP759, Surplus 4895, SRB118 all to reasonable to good effect. I would feel OK reducing many of these to some degree, but Not 4350, H100V, SRB118, or FSP759.
The books show it should be bunk, but I liked XMR4350 under a 250 gr Speer. It gave me 2500 at 61 gr. Only powder to do 2500 fps w/ a 250 gr for me w/o pressure signs in my gun. My particular rifle does seem a little "slow". So, all these should work if you want higher level speeds. I am sure RL17 would be called too slow as well, but works great for me when the bullet weight comes up.

I would very much stay away from trying reduced loads with AA1680. This is, at least in construction & burn rate, very much like WC680. I had a bad partial ignition experience w/ a Very Slightly reduced load of WC680 in a large capacity 50 cal handgun. Stuck the bullet in bore, large amount of powder compressed into solid mass that came out in a lump during disassembly. Could have been very close to a delayed ignition scenario w/ bullet lodged in bore.

I haven't shot a lot of cast in my 350 Rem but I did record a couple of groups using the rcbs 200gr cast. I used 42grs of IMR 4198 for 2271 fps and a 2.25" 100yd group. 39grs shot 4" at 2134fps. 25grs shot 9 into 2.6" with another shot opening the group to a bit over 4" and for some reason I didn't check velocity or at least didn't record it.
For jacketed bullets I shoot the Sierra 225 gr game king. I use 61grs of Tac for 2785 fps and 5/8"/3/4" groups. This is from a Rem 700 with a 24"barrel. 62grs gave a bit stiff bolt lift and opened the group just a bit.

Not intending a thread hi-jack, but I’ve got a Remmy M600 in .350RM and was interested in loading these 200grn Cast Performance g/c boolits:

    https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1988172847?pid=247808

Has anyone with a .350RM or .35 Whelen tried these?

Some of the negative reviews on the MidwayUSA link say the boolits aren't actually .358 at all.

    Thanks!
