    It's time for a 30-06

January apparently was 30-06 barrel month; I picked up a Remington 700 takeoff barrel for $30 and a Tikka T3X takeoff barrel for $65.
    I haven't owned or shot a 30-06 since 1999 so this is a start towards a reunion.....

Welcome home, there are some really good boolits and recipes for an '06. I can't imagine not having one.

It's rather amazing you've survived this long without at least one.

My Tikka T3 in 0-6 is without a doubt the most accurate rifle I own.... Can't imagine not having that one in my lineup...

The ought-6 was My 2nd center fire rifle. That I bought on My own. Don't have that one anymore. But I've not been without one for the last 53yrs.

I was 20 years old when I got my first 30-06 and I haven't been without one since. I will leave this old world before I ever am without one again. james

One of the classic calibers. When I standardized and downsized I came very close to picking the .30/06. Instead went with its little brother... .308. I had thousands of 7.62 military cases. Did not make any sense to have both calibers.

    Enjoy your new gun!

Read the sticky on "The Load" makes the 06 that much better, more fun for sure.
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.

The 30-06 has been used to shoot down airplanes. I don't think there is anything it's not good for.

That was my very first center fire rifle I purchased, back in 1971. I remember the first time shooting it. Expecting a lot of recoil, I was surprised that it didn't seem to kick that much at all. Still have it, even though it's not legal for hunting in the area I live.

Back in 1982, the first centerfire rifle I ever bought was a pre-64 Winchester model 70 (made in 1951) in 30-06. I put a leupold 3x9 scope on it and went hunting deer and pigs. I still have the rifle. At first I had a love/hate relationship with it because it was accurate and powerful, but the steel buttplate made it a cruel mistress. after a couple of years of it killing on one end and wounding on the other I put a Fajen stock on it, and it became hunting perfection. You can't say enough good things about the 30-06.

I believe it is OK to have both...especially since I do Not prefer the 308 for Cast!!!!!

    That was good.

My needs are simple...deer and black bear. If the SHTF, two legged predators at long range. Either caliber works...and I do not hunt with cast.

To be honest, I wish I had gone with the .30/06 and bought 1000 cases. Cheap military brass matters if you shoot a lot, and I do not shoot the .308’s much.

What do you find different between the 30.06 and .308 when casting?

My '06 had an aluminum buttplate. I contacted Remington and bought a recoil pad intended for a 7mm magnum. I did have to cut off a section of the stock, but I ended up having a length of pull about 1/2" longer than factory specs. That suited me fine, as I have long arms. That and the reduced felt recoil made the rifle much easier to shoot.

My early issue T3 22-250 will be a 30-06 with the replacement T3x barrel below it. There's nothing wrong with my "bobbed" 22-250- I don't go prairie dog hunting anymore so my .223 can handle varmint duties.
The Remington 700 barrel above the rifle is a free agent- it may end up as a 30-30 liner for a stub job in a Topper.
