We get that a few times in the Winter.

It's sleet. The conditions aren't right for it to snow, its rain that freezes solid on the way down,
but doesn't go up & down enough to accumulate into a bigger ball, and form hail before it lands.

Sometimes it's mixed in with regular freezing rain, that solidifies into a solid sheet on the ground.
Here, we call that a Winter mix.

Freezing rain is bad stuff. Worked in it in the past. Steel catwalks, barges and tank cars become skating rinks.

In Dallas, the city & county do a good job of spreading sand when the roads freeze,
but they just can't get to all the side roads and neighborhood streets.

They don't close the roads, but most schools and businesses close that day, or have late openings.

One time during rush hour, the guy on the radio was saying, that if you got into a minor accident-- be patient.
The Dallas Police had over 2,000 calls backed up ahead of you at the moment.

Im in the northern part of NYS. We used to get lots of snow. Over the past years its turned to more and more ice and rain for the winter months. I feel your pain.

Boy I don't miss that from my time in the Midwest! Walking out to your car to find 1/2" of ice between me and the door handle - my poor '94 Achieva took a whoopin from that. I did always like the term Winger Ed mentioned, the weatheman would say "a wintery mix" is in the forecast. It sounded so festive!

We've gotten some snow this year, but lots of ice (central Maine). We need to walk outside with cleats on or walk like a penguin. Ice has covered everything for maybe a week now. Lots of graupel snow too which isn't terribly common. It's where it starts snowing at a high and ultra cold layer of air and as the snowflakes fall through a humid layer it starts to collect frost. It's easy to recognize because it's as white as a snowflake but round, and it falls fast. I've seen them up to maybe 3/16" in diameter. No it's not sleet, that's one clear ice crystal.
    Let's go Brandon!

One of the aspects of La Niņa is more ice storms instead of snow. Here at 1700’ in Central NYS, it started out at -10 and now is around 30. Precipitation expected between 8-10 pm.

It has snowed here in lower AL since about 6am (6-8 hours now), but the ground is so warm that nothing is sticking. It's just cold and wet.
