    .54 Renegade...Boolit Mould Suggestions?

OK. Been handloading since the '70's, case-forming, etc, but no substantial experience w/ smokepoles. (Dinked around a little).

I'm curious if a mould exists that would cast a "Mine"-type boolit for the TC Renegade.

Even an undersized but paper-patched job would be considered.

    Any prospects?

There are a number of molds for the 54. Lyman Plains, Lee REAL, RB, and Mine. I believe the Renegade is a 1/48 twist. I have one and cast all but the Minie. I shoot patched round ball the most.

There is no problem so great, that it cannot be solved by the proper application of high explosives.

Round balls work fine in mine, but I cast the T/C Maxi-ball for it and a few other ML's. Like the Maxi-ball over the Maxi-hunter. The Maxi-ball has been more accurate for me and OH MY, it's puts a smack on game.

2nd on Maxi's. T/C still sells them cast and lubed with Bore Butter. You can buy a 20 pack to try them before you buy a mold.
You can find used molds on fleabay.

Happiness is a Warm GUN & more ammo to shoot in it.

My Experience and My Opinion, are just that, Mine.

Bothof mine shoot best with the Great Plains mold.

    Thanks fellows.

Have any of you slugged the bore of your .54 T/C? By removing the breech plug or by some other method?

DON'T remove the breech. You will ruin the barrel.

If you want barrel diameter, I would suggest using pin gauges or tap a round ball in and then pull it out with your stuck ball screw.

FWIW, I find round ball to be accurate and quite effective on deer in the 54. If you want to use conicals instead, I think it is hard to beat the maxi ball and molds are not real hard to come by. Lee REAL usually shoots well too.

    Stick with a round ball.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

My 54 Renegade loves a 530 patched round ball. I haven’t had any reason to try anything else. It puts a whooping on deer.

Thanks. I was going to ask about what diameter ball and looks like you just saved me the trouble.

Buy them before you get a mold. .520", .530", and .535". Mine shoots .530" and .535" horribly. It shoots a .520" and canvas patch as well as the best of them.

I've had very good results with the Lee R E A L bullet and still use them to this day. A good bullet lube is needed to keep the powder fouling moist.

    Hello EVR,

I'll throw a little different option at you,
I'm shooting a LEE 452-255-RF hand gun bullet in a sabot in my Lyman Great Plains Hunter.
I tried my RCBS 45-300-FN but the LEE seems to hold a little tighter group.
Not knowing if sabots are legal in your area, it's something else to consider.
They are a lot cleaner than Maxi & Minne Balls.

Caution. The Lyman GPH barrels are a 1/32 twist made for sabots and conicals.

Some of those Renegades in .54 cal had special round ball barrels I believe 1:66 ROT . I had one and a Green Mountain fast twist 45 cal barrel that was a drop in for the Renegade.
