Nine below zero? Well done for someone very serious about having fun!
I'm still trying to talk my nephew out of his Mitchell's Mauser m48- its the best shooting 98 8x57mm that I've shot- and I've shot more than a few.
What is a Zrak scope? It looks "period correct".

Gotta love those Mausers, no matter the model designation. Given a good bore, most of them will shoot well. Nice shooting-- I'll bet you can do even better in July when you're not shivering!

Might try Alliant 2400 as well.

One of the 8x57 M24-47 Yugos I have is my off hand practice rifle with a 195 Saeco, 16gr 2400 & WLP.
The rifle bore is absolutely terrible (I have looked at w/ scope and it looks horrifying, though it looks shiny when cleaned and peering down bore to a lit white wall, which tells you something about that "test"), and I clean it infrequently. I mean really infrequently. Like 400 rounds.

Knowing that groups open considerably w/ # shots fired, this is standard benched 100 yd results of the 195/16gr 2400/WLP load: 3.5" (40/40), 2.625" (30/40), 20/40 all touching in one large hole 1.875" high & 0.75" wide

Very nice thanks for the data point. I sadly shot the last of the store bought SAECO 8mm .324. Have no more!

M91 win the match Iron Sight Div.
Another shooter had a 1873 Springfield carbine and another a FN Mauser 98 carbine in 308.
    1908 7x57 and T38 shot as well.

Contrast to BA hunting rifles and scopes and BPCR both iron and scopes!

    Great fun!

Used to live in NY and the worst cold I worked in was -5 below zero with about a 40 mph wind. Was tying up a barge with #6 fuel oil as the cargo. That barge steamed for two days to get it hot enough to pump off. Living in Louisiana and last winter it got down to 22 degrees. Too cold for this old fart. Heating unit never shut off those days. Your a better man than me to brave those temps. Frank

When I read the title "M48" my first thought was, 'Cool, someone is going to shoot a tank cannon!'

No wonder the other benches look deserted. Living in Tennessee, +40ºf is about my limit any more. Old age and t2 diabetes has me shivering at that temperature. The last time I was out at that temp with a new 1911 my fingers just about fell off trying to load magazines.

Maybe when it gets up to 60ºf I'll get out the Yugo and my one 8mm mold.

Last few days around here have ranged from +11°F to +17°F. That's a little on the cool side for me to enjoy.

Last 3 nights have run from 14 degrees to 19 degrees. But it gets up to around 40+ during the day. But the wind has been running from 10 to around 30 miles per hour during the day making it a tough day to shoot. I will wait for less wind and more heat. james

Spent too many years in NYC working outside in all kinds of weather. Paying for it as my knees and joints really suffer due to all those years working outside. Love me some nice hot Louisiana weather. Frank

Don't think I'll be going to the range for a few days. 15° F and 23 inches of the white stuff last night. YUK!

Me too! I love a good Mauser.
    Even a bad one.
