Win. 748 with cast?

Title pretty much says it all. I snagged several unopened 1-pounders of Win. 748 from an estate auction last week...paid less than 'sticker price' for the whole lot. Some years back, I burned a fair amount of 748 in 7 TCU and 7BR and some in 30-06 but I'm not finding much data in current manuals for either jacketed or cast. Powder will be put to good use...I picked up several hundred pulled military FMJs from that same auction...but I'm curious if anyone has done any developement using 748 with cast in the .308-class rounds like 7.92x57, 7.5 Swiss, 7.65 Argentine, or 7.62x54?

It's a real favorite for j words in .308 and .223, and hard to find right now.
I'd save it for that or trade it off for something you know will work well with cast.

Lyman used to list W748 CB loads for the 7.92 x 57mm, but they warned against hang fires: They were right!

works great with full power loads and j's

I've only used it with cast for one batch to use up what was left after loading 5.56 jacketed. It worked well at 40yds in my 30-30. I always use a magnum primer for ball powder. Hang fires in a .358 Norma taught me that lesson!

W748 and BLC2 are close to the same Powder burn rate. I suggest you consider some of the research I have been doing with BLC-2 and the 311041 bullet in .308 Winchester:

Works great in 30-30 and 308 with 165 and 173 gr. cast gas check bullets.

Also good in the 358 and 338 federal, anything that lets you use a mostly full charge.

I haven't needed to break into the powder cache yet, but I've got 16lb of it for use with cast boolits. The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook - 3rd edition listed 748 as suitable for a great many cast loads.

some of my first ever 30-30 cast loads were with 748. many years ago. ive never used any ball powder without a mag primer and I never will, but that's just me. if I remember right I started loads with 2 to 3 grains less than starting load for j bullet. wish I had written down everything way back then, but that's just being young and ignorant.

I've used about 6 LBS of it in 30-30's, all with cast boolits. I've also used some in 303 Savage and the 30-40 cartridges. This gives top velocity and good accuracy with gas check boolits. 30 grains under an RCBS 30-180 FN makes for a superior load. 32.5 grains works well under a 311-041. It works in the 308 also, but I have seldom used it there for cast.

Used in 223, 270, and 30-30 with cast. It is my go to for 223 and a cast boolit, anywhere from 15 to 20 grains. No pressure signs with a small rifle or small pistol primer in 223, large rifle in 270 and 30-30.

it worked fine for me in a 30/30 with cast gas check boolits - proper loads though not plinkers
