1st time casting; help w/ 2230 and 30-30

Hello,

I'm trying to find data for 2230 with cast 30-30 and hope you can help me out. The bullet would be a 175gr ranch dog clone from arsenal molds and I was hoping to find info for both gc and pb since I've got one of their 50/50 5 cavities on the way, lubed with 45/45/10, gun is a marlin 336, alloy'll be 92/6/2 hardball which I'm 90% sure I'll air cool, filler should be easy enough to work out if necessary. A bit of a specific request I know but my budget is pretty much maxed out rite now and 2230's all I have on hand, and since I only have 200 large rifle primers to work with I was hoping to use up as few of them as possible on load work up; this'll be my first foray into casting and the goal is to hunt the later part of the season with it (rut's just now starting in NWFL). I went to google looking for this stuff but could only come up with 1 post with numbers on cast 30-30 w/2230 and I was hoping for a bit more to go on. Very much appreciate any help!

update: think I got what I was looking for re:2230 data, then asked about powders for reduced pb loads, struck out locally with suggestions from here/what I'd seen suggested elsewhere, but I did find and pick up a # of h380 to give another option for gc rounds since I think I've found decent fp data for it, I haven't been able to find anything on reduced loads with it though so if you know anything I'd very much appreciate it.

A friend of mine was a big fan of 2230 and a 311-041. 27.5 grains was his go to load for Cowboy Lever Action Silhouette.

I find that Ramshot X-Terminator works very well for myself in the 7.62x51R and 7.62 x51 with Cast Boolitz. I use in the old Ohaus 308170F in the 7.62 x 51R @ 25.3 gr for 1900 FPS from my Stevens 325. In the 7.62x 51 i use 26.5 Gr with the NOE 311158 FN for 1900 Fps. If one was to look at various manuals they would see, well possibly, that the loading data in any give cartridge is the same for AA 2230 and RS X-Terminator.

Thank you very much all, that gives me somewhere to start with the gc bullets, doesn't sound like this is the powder for plain base though.

Say I could scrape together $30ish bucks for a for a pound of powder to suite the pb one's, other than h4895 which I've heard about, do you have any suggestions?

IMR 3031 is a classic in the 30-30

Both 2400 and Re 7 have worked great in my .30-30s ; and h-335 if you want to go faster. And welcome to the forum, Clint!

Hi there,
If you have the plain based bullets, you will want to keep the velocity down to 1300 to 1400 fps. One of the best powders for performance and economy is Unique. If you have gas checked bullets, you cant really beat w748 or imr 3031. With these you should be able to reach factory velocities without leading the bore using the right lube and hardness of bullet and size. Your 45/45/10 lube will work ok for the plain based, but I have no experience with that lube at higher velocities, for which I use Bens red

This information is from an Accurate 2004 reloaders guide. I have used the 2230 data shown in the (L) 152 RN section with an rcbs 30-150-fn gas checked boolit with decent accuracy. This shows 173 grain data. I would recommend referencing other and later data. Hope this helps.

I have had very good luck with a gas checked boolit lubed with 45/45/10 at around 1700 fps. In my 3030.

This is always the best advice. Two identical guns could prefer different loads.

Actual load data is the same for your 175 gr. boolit with (GC ) or without ( PB ) a gas check .
If your 30-30 is a micro-groove barreled Marlin ... you will discover the Gas Check will be the more accurate boolit at hunting velocities .
A proven alloy is 50-50 clip on wheel weights and soft lead ... air cooled .
Fit of the boolit is much more important than hardness ... you do not want a hard brittle boolit to hunt deer with ... a softer tough boolit will serve you better .

Unique or Herco in the 7-10 grain range will work well for your plain base boolits in 30-30. 8.0 grains of Trailboss or Red Dot/Promo will also be worth considering.

I have read that 800X is also useful in the 7.0-10 grain range, but I have never used that, so I cannot recommend it based on personal experience. I CAN state that both Unique and Herco work very well, while Red Dot and Trailboss work, but were not as accurate in my experience. Your gun may tell you differently.

Unique, 2400, rx7, 4227 are good for low fps PB. 2250 is about same as H335, if you want fps, use the GC version, I don't think either download much.

Well I struck out with all afformentioned powders locally, but did find a pound of h380, which I found i think decent fp data on so i picked it up to have another option with the gc's. Do any of y'all know if it can be downloaded?

would the lowest listed charge here (23.4gr) be something I need to use a filler with? just a little confused since these charges and newer charges don't line up; max here is .2gr less than min there but each have almost identical velocities (~100fps difference but with 20" vs 24" bbl), so it makes me think the powders the same, I just don't get why they'd basically shift the numbers up (23.4-26 for a 2.6gr range in '04 vs 26.2-29.1 for a 2.9gr range now). I'd love for the min in your manual to be gtg, would basically double my charge range. I just worry about undercharging, though since it'd prob still have me fuller than @Screwbolts is with his larger cases I wonder if that's an actual concern.

Plus one on the no filler. Some people use them without ill effects, but they do add another variable that must be dealt with. The 30-30 has a long history of use with reduced charges without issues. It is a small volume case and responds well to low charge volumes. It is also interesting to note that Lyman used to publish data using Dacron filler but no longer does so. There was ample discussion on th site some years ago, use the search do dig that up and make your own decisions on their use.
