    Looking for a lube recipe

I'm casting Lee R.E.A.L. .50cal. 250gr. for my T.C. Renegade with 80gr. FFG or 100gr. Pyrodex. Bore butter gets a little soft in warm weather. Thanks, James

Emmerts or modified Emmerts in the lube sticky. I use a modified formula for all my BP and pistol shooting. You can adjust the proportion of beeswax to adjust to your weather - the hotter the higher the beeswax for a harder lube.

Gato Feo #1 works well in hot and cold environments. An old Winchester formula resurrected a few year back. Works in cap and ball pistols, black powder cartridges, and muzzle loaders. Keeps fouling soft, easily wiped and easily cleaned. By weight; mix sheep tallow, paraffin, and bees wax in a 1:1:2 ratio, respectively. It’s reportedly an equal to SPG, but much less expensive. As an aside, it works as well as Sno-Seal to waterproof your boots

Durofelt.com carries it. While there, consider some 1/8” wool felt for wads to use in your 1860. Fortunately, I have a few hats I’ve found at thrift stores but have used them for felt when pickings are slim.

I use beeswax and olive oil mixed one part wax to two parts oil for conicals, 3 parts oil for patch lube. You can adjust the ratio to suit your local climate as needed.

Unsalted lard...readily available at your local supermarket...makes a quite satisfactory substitute for 'sheep tallow'. Been using it in the 'modified Emmert's' formula for quite a few years with no issues.

One reason for sheep tallow is it’s less susceptible to going rancid than are lard or other tallows

Goya Manteca is an unsalted, refined lard product used in Mexican cooking. I use it 50-50 with beeswax. If you don't have beeswax you can substitute equal parts of anhydrous lanolin and paraffin for the beeswax.

I've not experienced any rancidity with unsalted lard. The can I'm working out of is over five years old. No special storage, sits on the shelf in the pantry. As mentioned prior, 50/50 with beeswax is what I'm using, cartridge and muzzle loader alike, works great.

A 50/50 mix of borebutter and beeswax works good also.

My favorite lube is Bore Butter, Crisco and Beeswax adjusted for the season of the year.

What I’ve come to believe is that It all comes down to the amount of lube you use. If you are shooting a boolit with big and deep lube grooves as well as a grease cookie, the exact lube mix is not as important, as if you were shooting a boolit with small grooves and no cookie.

Have anyone used deer tallow in their mix? I know you can use it for candles and make pie crust and waterproof leather and other uses .
