    7.62 x 39 experiment

I've been fooling around with the RCBS 130 grain spire point boolit in my Remington 799 bolt gun. So far SR4759 and Winchester LRP primers seem to work the best. I'm loading 13.0 grains of it in Lapua brass. These are only 50 yard groups, but are 10 shots. Target on the left .measures 1.105" with 2 flyers........8 rounds in .684 . Target on the right measures 1.436" with 1 flyer..........9 rounds in .944". This load probably doesn't have enough guts for 100 yards, haven't tried it yet.

I'm loading the same cartridge using 17 grns of 4759, but I'm shooting it in an SKS, so extreme accuracy ain't gonna happen.

Your groups look real good. You are using a gas check right?

The 7.62x39 is one of the most cast bullet friendly cartridges around. Takes a decent rifle like Herb's got to show it, though.

I wouldn't call that "fooling around" I'd call it great! Nice job, care to share a little more of the details?

Good work! That's getting into the "ragged one hole groups" area. And with 10 shots at that. Kind of puts all the 3 shot group guys to shame.

You don't need a lot of velocity for 100 yards. The shuetzen boys of a century ago used to shoot 300 yard matches with muzzle velocities around 1400 fps. Just takes a bullet that's still stable with that twist at the remaining velocity and LOTS of elevation adjustment. Did I mention the wind?

I get pretty good accuracy from my SKS shooting cast boolits. (2-3 MOA)

An SKS is a heck of a lot more accurate than an AK47.

I've used 2400, WW680, RL7, H4198, and AA2015 for propellants and they all shoot well.

...............Yup the 7.62x39 is a nice shooter, Mine is a 1894 Brazilian contract small ring Mauser with the Gunparts pre-chambered 22" barrel.

    7.62x39 28.0 surp 4895, Lee C312-155-2R, 2018 fps, 5 rnds/50 yards, 1.120".

The rifle. I'm happy with it.

I really like the idea of one of this round chambered in a lefty bolt. CZ chambers it in a right bolt, at least in Europe.

I must admit for me it would be the little brother for the 303 Brit as they share the same caliber give or take a .001 in new barrels. The available surplus ammo is also a plus.

I've never owned any rifle that didn't wander a lot when I attempted 10 shot groups. Those groups are bragging quality.

The Mauser is real nice. Makes me wish I was built backwards like most of the world.

The CZ 527 is the CZ bolter in 7.62x39mm, great light carbine. Just started loading cast in this flavor, working up more loads for next range trip.
    Nice shooting, sir!

..............Yes it is, .300" x .308". I lube in a .312" die then sent the boolit up through a .309" push through.

Nice groups... but I'm not surprised. The 7.62x39 is, after all, the parent case of the PPC cartridges of benchrest fame.

Thanks for that post...I have been trying to decide if I want to start loading for the little cartridge or not. I tend to want to handload for everything, but this thing looks like a buch of work. Oh well thats why I bought an auto press for I guess...

You efforts are looking great, the slower speed is great. I will have to try it in an auto loader to see if it has enough outgassing to run the action...

Just hard to go from thinking about 45-120 loads to 7.62 x 39 loads

I have always had a hankering for a mini style rifle bolt action like the minimauser or the Sako extra small action.

now if I could get it LH, and rebarreled in 35 cal, say a 9x39.... that would be neat

If youre "left", you aint "right".

I had a yugo mauser converted to the 7.62x39 years ago. Was complete with magazine block, shortened follower, and lengthened ejector. VERY accurate with j-bullets. Would shoot clay pigeons at 400 yards all day long with Silver bear FMJ. Off a bench, of course. Never did try cast with that rifle.
I came into this world kicking, screaming, and covered in someone elses blood. I plan to go out the same way.

Okay, since I haven't done this yet, what is the general feeling about Gas Checks for 7.62x39? Essential, or superfluous? I have a Lyman 311410 DC that I want to use for this, and it does NOT have Gas Checks. Should I look for something else?

The 311410 was used a lot for .30 Carbine with some success. How well it'll work in your 7.62x39 will depend on the dimensions, alloy, and velocity. You need to try it and work your way up with it. If you're not happy with the velocity that you can achieve without the accuracy going away, then look for another mold that uses gas checks. Of course, any excuse to buy another mold is always good....

    Atta boy Herb.
Reading can provide limited education because only shooting provides YOUR answers as you tie everything together for THAT gun. The better the gun, the less you have to know / do & the more flexibility you have to achieve success.
