BCB Coatings dissapointment

I much prefer the dark gray look to the purple. I would think of this as a win win situation.

If I wanted grey, I would have gotten grey... I have black, but after this may not need it...

Oh, I don't know, expecting purple and getting grey for one... thought that would have been obvious

I get facebook ads from BCB weekly. I always respond and ask how they perform. No credible answer yet from any posters. I asked about BCB on this forum several months ago and got blank stares. As far as I am concerned, this forum is the gold standard for alternative coatings, but BCB has not found it's way here yet, except for this one thread.

Looks fine to me but I UNDERSTAND you were hoping for a bright purple. Hopefully they shoot better then they look for you. To me looks like the powder coated well and was even.

The goods and the bads...

Goods
1) the blend of ethanol and acetone leaves the coating wetter longer so a smoother finish is easier to obtain than with hitek. This solvent cut would probably do the same with hitek, but I haven't tried yet.

2) Coating is durable and cured at 385f for 20 minutes. Passes smash test. Slight transfer in the acetone test.

3) the coating looks more like powder coating than hitek does.

4) solvent flash is faster to get smooth bullets than with hitek. Just a few minutes vs 10+ under a fan with hitek.

The bads
1) color goes off dramatically when baking

2) advertised cure time of 10 min at 365 (alloy temp) is misleading as it takes about that time for the bullet core to get to 365 in a 400f oven. (12 min to be exact) so the actual prescribed cure time is mire like 20 min...

3) coating was sent in small ziplick bags. The zips get filled with powder and it is fine enough that the bags are exceedingly difficult to seal again. I ended up putting the material in an empty hitek jar.

4) (minor) the mixing instructions state to shake vigorously and let sit for an hour to allow all the powder to dissolve. More pre-planning needed.

4) The concentration of powder in solvent is 20% vs 14% for hitek, and they also recommend adding more of the mixture (20-30% more) than hitek so you will use more material to coat the same number of bullets.

5) two solvent blend instead of 1.


Commentary
I fired a hundred rounds yesterday in my bullseye 45. Shot as expected with no issues and no leading. Coating doesn't impact accuracy out to 50 yards in my 45s so the coating does what coatings do with respect to leading

My issue is I cast using three molds for the same bullet profile (I shoot a lot) and have been using different colors to signify which mold the bullet came from. I also use colors to differentiate different load combinations so while functionally its just a coating, I'm using the visual aspect as a sorting tool as well, which is why color is important to me.

I'm guessing the target, perp or critter won't care about the color. You put the work into coating them, now shoot them. You can always cast and coat new ones in any color.

I contacted BCB.they said "purple is super temp sensitive... were working on it..."

I'll try some.other colors when I have more bullets to coat

Sounds very similar to HiTek, maybe even the same type of technology/chemistry. HiTek has been trying for years to make a heat stable blue.

I’m good with HiTek’s range of colors, so I’ll stick with the Aussie original rather than this South African variant.

Nothing like HITEK.
Closer to Powdercoat mixed with Acetone and some other solvent.
I tried the black and Honestly far too much mucking around compared to HITEK.
Longer bake time, Longer first mix reaction time. Very Dull.

I'll stick with what I know works from a commercial standpoint.

Almost exactly like hitek, even down to the smell when coating. They want a different solvent mix, but ethanol and acetone isn't that big of a change and hitek suggests this to slow evaporation as well. I don't think the 1 hour soak time to dissolve is really necessary but I do it. You are putting it on heavier than hitek suggests so that is why it looks more like powder. The pigment package seems a bit heavier as well.

That said... tried "black cherry" last night... lots of black, no cherry...

I won't buy it again, as hitek is same price and works pretty good.
