    1858 remington cylinder swapping

Hello, and thanks for any info concerning different brand cylinders in cap and ball revolver repros. Can a standard 1958 Remington 44 cylinder interchange with a 1858 Remington carbine plus I have a 1860 colt Army 44 of course, made by some Italian company for Bill Edward's. It's a 1860 colt BillEduards repro made in 1957 and I want to get a spare cylinder but not sure if any will interchange. Thanks again

If the cylinders are made by the same manufacturer then they should work. My pair of Pietta brass frame Rem 1858's do Interchange. But then they were bought together and at the same time and place.

I believe that Uberti is the sole manufacturer of the modern 1858 Remington carbine repros. An 1858 Rem .44 cylinder manufactured by Uberti can be swapped in, but it may be necessary to stone a few thousandths off the cylinder's forward face to fit properly.... at least, that was my experience.

Your older one is likely an ASM , Armi San Marko (I think) .

The deal is the various makers at least at the start made a faithful copy from an original example . Because of wear , care , age etc , and the manufacturing limitations of the Civil War era some of them may as well be a different gun altogether .

The 3 or 4 Italian makers merged 1 or 2 and then were bought by and standardized under Beretta . They were already pretty well aligned and parts for the most part could be fitted from those to these . ASM not so much and now rehomed , broken up , and basically completely gone , screws are about all that's really available for parts consistently .

I swap Pietta's and never noticed not being able to hit the steel at 20 yards.

    Hello Itllkeal,

The Carbines are made by Uberti, they will interchange with Uberti Revolver Cylinders.

As far as Pietta Cylinders, I remember reading where the Uberti Carbine could be modified to use the Pietta Cylinder.
But after the modification, one could no longer use the Uberti Cylinder.
This was something to consider back when Cabela's was selling cylinders for $39.

The Pietta Cylinders will interchange on Pietta revolvers.
But they did change the Locking Bolt & Notch dimensions from 0.136" wide
on about 2000 and earlier manufacture, to 0.156" wide on 2001 and later.
One can still interchange, but the bolt of correct width must also be changed.
