    Anyone load with H4198?

A good friend was who buys gun collections for his gun shop was offered a few 1 gallon glass jugs of H4198, when he went down to basement in house to get it there was 3 wooden barrels of it.
What is is worth and what all can you load with it.
I'm picking up a jug today to do some .223 loads, that's the only info I can find in my books for it.

4198 is a good powder w/ nitro-for-black load formulas and cast boolits in old BPCR like the 45-70, and it works in 7.62x39 and similar size cartridges. Personally I use it in 577/450 Martini Henry loads as well as .45-70.

In .32-20 load a nominal case full, with 1/8" compression of the powder by the seated bullet in the same manner as if loading black powder.
Safe in original 1873 Winchester with 100-grain Hornady .312" XTP hollowpoint and effective deer load where legal. Use same load in my 1939 S&W Hand Ejector.

If it were me I would transfer it to old bleach jugs or 2 liter dry soda bottles. I kept some H4831 in 2 liter bottles for 10 years in a dry, dark, cool place with no degradation.

h4198 worked well for me in 7.62x39. It's a stick powder, but it seems to meter okay.

The 1990 IMR powder booklet will include data for most any cartridge you might want to load for. I don't know if it is online but I would think it should be. It is rumored that Remington uses it for it's reduced recoil loads in 30-06, 308, and others. I have shot a fair bit of it but have shot much more IMR4227. Would love to find a stash of that!
    Good Luck,

Ya need to do a little research, but you should find out its pretty versatile stuff.
I'd get several pounds, maybe even all of it. Deals like that don't come along very often.

It might even be the perfect reason to get at least one more rifle to use it for.

It works very well in .38-55.

I've used H4198 in many calibers, both full power in some and reduced in many - .223, 30-30, 32 Special, 35 Remington, 300 Savage, 303 Savage, 308 Win, 358 Win, 444, 45-70, 218 Bee, even the .243 Win with 55 grain bullets. It can be useful in most rifles. I'd take as much as you can get. It is easy to work with, even pressure rise, not particularly temp sensitive, relatively clean burning and ignites easily.

I’ve never used H4198 but I’ve used a bunch of IMR 4198 and still do in my 38-55. I’m not sure how much difference there is between the two 4198s.

its about the same. on the burn rate they are 72(imr4198) and 73(h4198). you could take rel7 and start with the minimum load of either h or imr 4198 and go from there.

Take all of the H4198 you can get. Don’t know what other calibers you reload other than .223 and I don’t load .223 but in the ones I do H4198 is the one I always go back to.

If your .223 is an AR15, IMR4198 loads must be near maximum for reliable function. But it shines in a .222 or .223 bolt action IME. I would absolutely check into getting some of that H4198- but what is with the glass jars and wooden barrels? I’m not sure about that packaging but I’ve never bought more than an 8 lb jug at a time.
