    Guinness Beef Stew

One of our local Irish taverns has Guinness Beef Stew on the menu. Very good, dark stew with big ol' giant chunks of quality beef and the works.

So, the other day, I was craving it in a big way and whipped up a batch. Came out fantastic!

These days, I don't generally look up a single recipe except for baked goods. In this case, I reviewed about six online recipes and came up with something not too different from this:

Note the added bacon. Made a huge difference!

Sorry I didn't take any pics. It got scarfed up in no time!

Took me a while to figure out why the gravy in the Scottish meat pies was so much better than mine. Beer of any sort really adds great flavor to gravies and stews!

Burn a couple slices of bread to black, pitch it in your stew and you'll be all set! That's just plain nasty stuff! Why anyone would ruin good beef and taters that way is beyond me! I guess it's an acquired taste? Just nasty!

Guinness is good food, brought to us by the best that nature has to offer us.

Putting it in stew is a miracle of miracles!

That stew sounds delicious and it's easy to make low carb. Can't remove the Guiness though. That's gotta stay.

I detest cooked celery, but it's easy enough to sub' celeriac. For thickener ditch the flour and use xanthan gum, guar gum, or Konjack root powder. I think Nagi mentioned cauliflour mash instead of mashed potatoes. The few carrots isn't a deal breaker.

Like most stews and soups, it's quite adaptable. Throw in whatcha got. Leave out whatcha don't like. It's all good, no matter what!

Any good stout works in stew... chili needs a cheap lager(drinkable one!) to be good...

The bottled Guinness is awful, the cans are better. Draught Guinness served at the correct temperature is wonderful and I would happily dive in a vat and backstroke thru it.

I may well try this recipe this winter, thanks for posting it.

Don't care for celery in my stew either, but each chunk is about 4" long, so its easier to get it out of the bowl before you eat it.

Draught Guinness is really the only form that is drinkable. Kind of like an alcoholic milkshake! While it may be used in a stew, I would rather drink it. As for the recipe, it sounds like "Cowboy Stew", which use coffee instead of beer for the liquid.

Rockrat, trust me on this, use Celeriac. It's like potato texture but tastes like celery.

Got a receipe somewhere for a guinness brisket. Since I'm headed back out to the Canada border and hotel/airbnb, guess I'll have to try the stew.

I'd been curious for years about the hubbub over Guinness, so I tried some once at an event of some kind, it was draft. Tried a few sips and determined it was the nastiest tasting stuff I'd ever encountered. Tried a couple more sips, just couldn't do it. Poured it out. Guess it ain't for everybody.
