    In search of a mold

I'm looking for a Lyman mold. John Taffin wrote of it. It was basically the .454424 SWC cut down to throw a bullet of about 235 grains. (I "think.") I'm sure it's out of production. Can anyone tell me its number or if others make a mold similar to it?

Just did a check of old articles on the Internet. Charles Graff wrote about the Lyman 452423...is this what I'm looking for?Click image for larger version.

The bullet is the one in the center.

I don't see one that is a SWC. The 454309 is a button nose that is 235gr.

NOE makes a 452-228 but you'd have to call him to request him to make a few of them, since that one is out of stock.

    KE4GWE - - - - - - Colt 1860, it just feels right.

Yes likely, 452423 was the Elmer design for the 1917 45ACP revolver. I believe it was right around that weight and was a little lighter than his .45 colt design. I've been keeping my eyes open for one of these and they are few and far behind.

Yes ...the Lyman #452423 - 235 gr. SWC was based on the #454424 - 255 gr. SWC .

I want to say I think I remember reading that Elmer Keith was so pleased with the 255 gr. #454424 SWC ( for the 45 Colt ) that he immediatly set to work and designed the 235 gr. #452423 SWC for the 45 auto-rim and 45 acp revolvers of the time .
I could be wrong about that .
In his 1936 book "Sixgun Cartridges & Loads" on page 151 he writes :
" .45 Auto Rim . In this cartridge I have used 9.5 grs. of Dupont #80 with solid head cases for the 235 gr. Keith-Lyman bullet #452423 sized .452" . "
This could be the boolit you seek ... loading some 45 Auto or Auto Rim for revolvers ?

N.O.E. makes a great copy of the #452423
Mine drops at 245gr with My alloy of RS/#2.
A very smooth casting mold, it's My go to bullet for paper punching.

I have one. A friend of mine got it in an estate sale. He got about $800.00 worth of reloading equipment for $300.00. I sold a Hollywood multi station press for him that he got in the deal, I sold it on here for $250.00 plus shipping. I had to build a wooden cradle for it to ship it. I really like that mold. It works great in my Ruger 45 Colt. Haven't tried it in the 45 Auto.

Take a look at Precision/Arsenal Molds site, they have a SWC very much like your wanting.

Check ebay every few days, things turn up all the time. The problem is that everyone else is doing the same, makes it hard and the bidding wars get ridiculous.
