    Weatherby 270 Mag

Anyone here reload for a Weatherby 270 Mag?
Is there any brass that can be converted?

As I recall, he had the basic belted mag. case from a H&H or something and necked sized it up & down
for most of his Weatherby Magnums.

Sort of like how everybody played around with the .30-06 case and made several different calibers from it.

I’ve converted 7mm Wby Mag before. Also you can try some 7mm Rem Mag but have to blow out the shoulder for the Wby radius

It looks like 300 H&H brass can be converted.
I'm thinking that the best way to go would be to buy loaded ammo and save the brass.
Anything special to know about reloading them?

Nothing special except they take a lot of powder. If reforming from another caliber, make sure you trim/shorten the neck as the brass will flow forward

The short necked 300 Winchester made into 270 Weatherby leaves the neck long enough to trim to 270 Weatherby factory length. Most other 30-06 length magnum cases leave the neck short for 270 Weatherby brass. I had a Ruger No.1 in 270 Weatherby and a Ruger 77 338 Winchester so use to just order 300 Win mag brass to make both. Still have the 338.

I have the rifle but it's going to my son. Factory ammo is kinda pricey so I suggested loading for it.

In 1989, in Panama, I ordered my 270 Mk something or other, along with an over/under 12 gauge directly from the factory and received it just in time to have it put on my return orders to CONUS. After returning, I went to the local fun store and bought a $36 box of WBY ammo. Next purchase within the week was a Lyman turret with kit so I could afford to feed the 26” barreled brush-snagger. Ended up giving it to an Army buddy last year

It has been a few decades since I reloaded for the .270 Wby. IIRC you will find it hard to match factory performance with your home brewed loads. But there are new bullets and powders since I was doing it.

The case is too long for the commonly available 7mm Rem Mag to be converted and have a full length neck. Anything the length of the .300 Win mag or longer could be used.

Truthfully, the 130 grain factory load worked superbly on Missouri White tail, I think it used the Hornady bullet, I never bought any with the Nosler Partition.

I bought 250 Remington cases when I got my 300 WBY. I'd just buy the brass.

One thing on accuracy, I fought mine for 3 months and was complaining about the accuracy one day at the range and the guy next to me was shooting a 257 wby mag and a 340 wby mag. He said to measure from the ogive length on any given factory round and match it with your bullet of choice. This will match the factory freebore and you will get better accuracy. The other would be to find the distance from the closed bolt face to the lands and back off 0.005's.

I went with the factory length route using a hex style bullet comparator to determine the measurment.

I began to get the same accuracy as factory ammo and have never looked back. I've used it with 180 gr Speer Grand Slams, Hornady SST, Sierra Game kings and Nosler ballistic tips bullets and 150 gr Speer SP's. If I really concentrate I get 3/4 MOA at 100 & 200 yards from the bench.
