    First pistol deer

Got my first deer with pistol this morning. Used a cast Keith style bullet in one of my reloads. Ruger Super Blackhawk hunter 44 mag.

I have 15 handgun deer to my name. That goes back to the days Ohio was shotgun, muzzleloader or pistol. The first one I shot with a hot stepping 180 grain sierra 44. Big mistake. Had I not hit her at 80 yards in the neck I would not have collected that one. The bullet blew up with a flesh wound. Then I went to 240 grain hollow points. They worked but not impressively. Then someone gave me some 300 grain cast flat nose. I never looked back, never used jacketed to hunt with again. I went to a 45 colt T/C contender Super 14 with a 2x scope. Longest handgun kill with that was 140 yards. Still had complete penetration and that on an angling away shot.

I’ve taken a couple with a handgun. It’s a good bit harder than using a rifle and just a bit easier than using a bow & arrow. A good hit like that is a trophy in itself and then there’s the good eat’n as referenced above.

    Congratulations!

Congradulation on the fine hunt. I have shot a truck load with a 44 SBH Ruger. 240 grain SWC. Never lost one and very little if any tracking. To me it is the hunt and getting very close. Harder to miss when close and the skill needed it get ose means a lot to me.

Congratulations on a nice longhead. Great handgun. My favorite hunting revolver is a Bisley hunter .44.

Congratulations! Hoping this is your first of many more handgun hunting successes!

I have used the Keith SWC on many kills, and it gets the job done!

Now you just have to wait until 2 deer line up just right and get them both with one shot, I did that once by accident. Was concentrating on the front sight and the sweet spot on deer #1, didn't notice deer#2 had walked behind her. Ruger Blackhawk in 45LC, 250gn solid FP traveling about 1,000fps. Through and through on both deer.

Nice shooting . Nice to see how it all work out for you . You got some good meat there. Enjoy your work. You have a nice looking gun also. Like the scope set up also , I have a scope on my RH 44 mag also when I want to use it at times . I have not got a deer with it yet. Always took out the early muzzle loaders season and bow season because after I normal trap.

Congrats!!! I hunt with the same pistol most of the time. I have the SBH in .44 Mag and .45LC, trying to find the .41 Mag to complete my collection (at a price I can afford!) of the Hunter models. I have harvested critters all over with these two calibers and my own cast bullets. The 43-255H from Mr. Tom at Accurate Molds is my GO-TO bullet for the .44 Mag at about 1250FPS. My alloy is 30:1 (50% COWW/50%lead + 1 lb. pewter) and is about a 13/15 BHN and I'm very happy with its performance. Welcome aboard to the forum and good luck for the rest of your season.
