Got the 1895 Out to Check Some Ammunition

I was given some 40 rounds of factory ammunition recently for my 1895. Took four rounds (one full load) to make sure the sights were on. Tacked my target at about 125 yards and walked back to my rifle. The first shot was fired from a field rested position, using a sapling as a brace. My binoculars showed it to be centered on the target. The next three round were to the right a bit but everything could be covered by an index card.



Here is the rifle.



The load was Hornady, 405 WCF, 300 JSP, at 2200 FPS. Not my everyday load but nice to know it, and I are still up to it.

My experience with the Winchester Model 95 in 405 is limited to my late model Miroku “tang safety”reproduction.



It is uncannily accurate with factory ammo and my handloads that approximate factory ballistics.

It breaks my heart that Hornady quit making the brass as I tend to run my loads in 405 right at factory speeds.

For “everyday” loads, I use 28 grains of 5744 under the Lyman 412263 to approximate the 40-72 blackpowder load. Much easier on my artificial shoulder and capable of most anything in the lower 48.

I've got some .405 loaded up with black powder. 77grs 2ff and a gas check bullet with SPG lube It's a 1925 era gun with a climin lyman and a shotgun buttstock. I hope I can get the same accuracy as you. Time will tell.

I took my .405 out yesterday and shot some black powder and some smokeless. I did it all offhand with a 30mph cross wind
Couldn't tell much other than it shoots low with my loads. Shooting a 270gr bullet with a gas check lubed with SPG. Nice lube ring at the muzzle and fouling wasn't bad. I shot the wire legs off of my target frame and had to quit. It sure has a big boom!
