300 Blackout Makes More Meat!

I was trying to slip out to the woods through one of my orchards and had only made it some 40 yards down the row when on a small rise in the orchard I noticed 4 does bedded down about 50 yards away. It was snowing off and on and at the moment it was quite intense. As I pulled up the gun to look through the scope my movement caught their attention but not enough to alarm them. We had a bit of a stare down as I picked out what looked to be the largest of them who also happened to be facing directly at me. I put the crosshairs right where the neck and chest meet and let the 300 blackout do it’s thing! With a dull sodden PLUNK the bullet connected with the doe and in a flash all 4 got up and took off straight away.

I started tracking pretty quickly as the snow was really coming down and I know the bullet doesn’t leave much if any blood trails so I needed to get on the tracks before the snow covered them and any possible blood trails. I walked over to where they were bedded and started following tracks and had only gone some 50 yards when I bumped them. They weren’t to alarmed as I had the wind and snow in my favor, but they knew something was there and weren’t sure what I was. I watched them for a minute or so but between the snow and them moving I couldn’t tell how many were there, they finally became uneasy enough that they ran for the wood lot at the end of the orchard. As I was crossing rows in the orchard to get to where I last saw the group I looked down one of the rows and found my deer laying about half way between me and where I last saw the group. It almost looks like she bedded back down and just went to sleep!

The 200 grain Lee C309-200r went in right where I aimed, hit the front lobe of the left lung and put about an inch long gash in the heart before going through the paunch. There was very little blood externally but she has massive hemorrhaging in her chest cavity. All in all I’m very pleased with this combination of boolit and AR pistol.

Sorry I forgot to add that. 8.2 grains of Lil Gun sparked by Federal AR-Match primers for a velocity of about 1070 fps.

Excellent. As Jack O'Connor taught me in his writings, a proper buller placed properly gets the job done. A close to subsonic bullet that doesn't expand has gotten the job done for 300 years. Well done!

edit: Just curious, if you found the bullet where was it found? My guess is that penetration was pretty phenomenal.

There's a thread near this one asking about required ft/lbs. But the question is like asking about how do the taste of an apple and lemon compare? Both work differently but both work.

ive shot 6 deer with the 300 bo. All good clean quick kills. But i do have to admit that i used a 110 barnes.

I haven’t recovered the boolit but I’m hoping to when I process the deer. Since the stomach was ruptured I didn’t do a whole lot of digging around to investigate the bullets path after it passed through the diaphragm.

I have looked into the Forrester Hollow Point setup to add hollow points to these. I may just have to see if my wife thinks I’ve been good enough to get one for Christmas!

Good luck on getting one for Christmas. I have had one on order for about two months. Recently contacted Forster and they said probably another twelve weeks!

Thanks on the report using subs for hunting. I'd like to try some on hogs if I ever get the chance.

Range scrap. These ones I just tumble lubed with 50/50 Alox/Johnson’s paste wax and gas checked. I’ve also had good luck powder coating without the check.

i have a AAC rem md 7 in 300bk and lit-gun is your friend, i shoot a 125 gr nosler at 2400 fps and a 150gr nosler at 2200 fps. it acts like a 30-30 win, i have killed several deer with it thru their lungs with a standing broadside shot, most under 100 yards.
