A friend recently gave me an unopened pound of Goex cannon. What on earth can I do with this! I have no cannon.

The obvious answer is to build a cannon. As a member here you should have known that…

10 or 12 gauge blanks is the first thing that comes to mind.
This is the perfect reason why you 'need' to buy, or build a cannon.
Or better yet, a bowling ball mortar--- even though that pound of powder will only give ya four shots.

OK People. Enough of this idle chit-chat.

Or do what your "friend" did to you, give it to one of your "friends".
I was gifted a can once after my older brother sold his black powder mortar , I used it in my 50 caliber rifle it worked fine , I would just shoot it in rifle for practice till it is gone .
Maybe sieve it down to a finer/usable granule?

All my odd black powder and substitutes go in the Cowboy Action shotgun. Get to make smoke with no need for accuracy in an easily cleaned side x side.
The only amendment the Democrats support is the 5th.
Grind it to whatever size you need and screen it? You will get 2f, 3f and 4f

The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government.

I've been shooting Civil War artillery in live fire competition for almost 30 years. There's really no small arms use for Cannon grade GOEX. Even in full military loads, the specified charge of powder, per original manuals, for the 3" rifled guns (10-pdr Parrott and 3" Ordnance Rifle) was "1 lb Mortar Powder," equivalent to today's GOEX 1F. I have shot hundreds of these loads over the years at targets 1000-1300 yards distant (on military bases). Even for blank cartridges, unless an authoritative charge is used, there is a tendency to get a "sneeze" or 'cough" instead of a report if coarser powder than 1F is used.
Here's some video of my gun in action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QVZkuK0NjoA&t=60s Other interesting artillery stuff on my youtube channel as well, especially the History Channel show "Artillery Games"

Also shoot a 10-PDR Parrott Rifle in competition
Duplex load it.
In 45-70 400 grain or 50-70 with a 450 grain cast drop in 10 grains 3F then add the cannon powder to whatever level you need it to have about 1/8th " compression with your loaded bullet. Do not purposely mix the two powders. Just poor the "C" in on the 3F.
You will not get to "origonal manual" velocities but you sure will have alot of fun downing critters, banging steel or just blasting rocks to gravel.
