222 Rem proven powders

In my 788 rem. 222 I used IMR 4895 with Hornady SX 50 and 55 gr. jacketed bullets. For cast I used 748 with the Lyman 225415 boolits. Both loads very accurate in my rifle.

Way back in the day I shot 1000s of rounds through a Remington 722 in 222 Rem.
I used 4198 exclusively with 50 gr. bullets.
I am now shooting a 221 with excellent results wit H322.
i would try it also.

Had a 340 Savage that shot factory 50 gr jackets into .750".

I had the NOE 225-55 @ 62gr and loaded it over 19.0 H322 for 2640 fps . Same groups .
I never loaded any jackets for it , saving them for the 223 1-8" barrels . Same powder 21.0 gr .

I found a great load and quit there .

It has been over 40 years but the most accurate rifle I ever owned was a Hart barreled Remington 722. 52 grain HPs over 19.0 grains of 4198. It didn't meter for beans, but that was the only rifle I ever owned that I could consistently shoot MOA 10 shot groups with.

Had a Remington 40x repeater in 222 years back. IMR 4198 and Remington 52 0r 55 grain match bullets, when I could not get the Remingtons then used Sierra 52 or 55 grains 4198. I used 19 grains in the 40x. Frank

The 222 has, for decades, had a reputation for being an inherently accurate cartridge. At one point, it was the got cartridge for short range bench rest competition. Normally, it can be made very accurate with most combinations of powders and bullets that are suitable for the cartridge.
A little testing with powder charge and seating depth will usually produce good groups.

Well made some rounds using 4198 from 18.5 to 19.5. They shot good enough for what I want to use it for but nothing outstanding. I'm almost positive it's not going to get any better though. I am shooting these out of a Savage 24 and the trigger pull is so hard that when I went to shoot my first group, I thought I had a safety on I didn't know about. Actually pulled the gun down and examined for a safety, nope, no safety. Trigger pull going to be the limiting factor in groups size I think. 19 grains and 19.5 looked about identical. Think I remember reading that those 24's are hard to work on the triggers so might be what I have to work with.

When I was in school I knew a guy with a Savage 340 in .222 Remington. He reloaded with a tong tool. He had read that you didn't need to weigh charges if you just filled a sized case with IMR3031 and seated a 50 grain bullet over it. Compressed load. He shot a lot of groundhogs and ground squirrels with that load.

Always had best luck with Accutate 2015 BR and 2230 in my older rem bdl varmiter just about any powder shot well under a 52 gr flat base bullet
