    222 Rem proven powders

About to start loading the 222 Rem for the first time. Will be starting with 55gn jacketed. Are there any proven powders that this caliber likes? Looking for a good starting point before wasting a bunch of components. I have both IMR and Hodgdon 4198, also some Accurate 2460. Those are probably the most suitable I have for starting with.

I love BLC2 and H335. With them, after you find your load, set your measure and don't worry. They meter more accurately than you can weigh. jd
It seems that people who do almost nothing, often complain loudly when it's time to do it.

Great thank you, I think I have a few lbs of BLC2 as well.

RL-7 was the go-to powder when the .222 was the competitive benchrest cartridge, back in the 1950s and early '60s. I have only one .222, never tried anything else with 50 grain Sierras. It's been a while.

In my neck of the woods, IMR4198 was the go to powder for the .222. I also have had good success with 748 also.

Agree with RL7 as being the powder most often favored back in the day. However, I had equal success with 55 gr Hornady SXs over H335 and BLC-2.

i shot out my savage m340 in 222 rem barrel with h322 and 50gr hornady sp. that was the best rifle i ever owned, should have rebarreled it instead of selling it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Turns out the BLC2 I thought I had was HS6 instead. Guess for now I'll be trying out the 4198 then.

H322 always worked out best for me in the 222. Just love that round in my Rem 722.

H335 with Hornady 50 SX shoot very well in my 788.
Take a kid to the range, you'll both be glad you did.

Remington probably used IMR 4198 from the beginning, too. It'll probably work great in that Uber accurate classic.

Hornady, volume II - .222, page #69, the H lab used 23 grains of BLC-2 to produce many one hole groups. I've used IMR 4198 for several years and now will be trying the old H lab load. Walt Berger (Berger Bullets) referenced H335 shooting 1 hole groups.

I've used a bunch of IMR 4198 where it was listed in whatever caliber, and have never been disappointed with it.

using 4198 here but using a zmax 55gr , not optimal speed but a good solid round.
mostly for Fox but have taken some Deer with it , smaller deer no problem.

While I haven't seen any in stock for a long time I have some targets here with many tiny five shot groups using Varget.

From my notebook - RCBS 55-SP sized .225, WC-820 12.0 grs average velocity 2643 fps extreme spread 15 fps, Winchester Small Rifle primer. This in a Remington 700. 50 yd group was 1.5 inches

I never got consistently good accuracy with cast in the .22 centerfires. The jacketed bullets performed much better, I just moved on to other projects.
