First outing with my Rifle boolits

So i had bought a box of Commercial Cast DRG 30 cal 308 boolits a few months ago. At 25 yards i was getting 2-3 Foot groups, no lie. They mic'd at 308 so my guess was they were tumbling down the barrel. I acquired an RCBS Iron 2 cav 180gr mold from auction. I made about 190 boolits. I PC'd and GC'd them. I wasn't sure what to expect from them but here is the result at 100 yards. Keep in mind i haven't down a load work up yet. I will also be looking at getting some unique powder because if i can replicate these results at a third the powder charge i'll be laughing.

Unique is my favorite cast boolit powder. 10 gr. is almost a standard load for most rifle calibers, at least for 30 cal to 35 cal. Even for my Ruger 45 Colt and my S&W 44 mag. It has a tendency to not measure well through a powder measure in humid states. It is quite dry here in Arizona.

Nice group for beginning to work up a load, congrats. I'm finding that Alliant Reloder 7 is working well in most of my cast rifle loads. Down to less than half a pound, wish I could find more.

So I just back from the range. Did a 3 shot group using Unique. Did 9,10,11 and 12 grains.

    9 did the best group

Try 16 gr of 2400. That is one of the standard 30 cal. cast boolit loads. I use it alot with 311299 200 gr boolits.

You might try "The Load" 13grn of Red Dot for a mild shooting load.
Nice group you might just stay there
I started out with nothing and I still have most of it left.

You might want to revisit that 10 grain group. Try 9.5 grains and thereabouts.

I was going to focus on both 9 and 10. Two holes in the same in 10 had me excited.

Whatever you do ...don't loose this load . It don't get much better than 5 shots UNDER 1" !!!
Keep looking and testing ... but that group isn't bad at all ...!

Thanks. I was really happy with that. Going out Wednesday back to the range to do a few more loads of the unique 9-10 grains and then try 32 of D4895 maybe 3-5 shot groups and see how they perform. I will update on Wednesday.

How does D4895 compare to IMR4895?

I’ve never used IMR4895 but for the D version it states to use IMR’s data less 10%. I don’t have a chrono yet so I can’t say how fast I’m pushing 32 gr at.

You've got some good groups to start with. Is that the 'pointy' RCBS bullet? If so it is known to be an accurate bullet.

What is the twist rate of your rifle, 1-12?

Just got back from the range. Some things to note. It was snowing and -5 Celsius. Was having some issues getting a bead on the targets because of the snow.

I did a load of unique to hone and it came out that 9gr was the best for my rifle.

    1.227” 5 shot group at 100 yards

    WOW!!! Nice reloading/shooting.

Interesting that those loads are so different but yet group the same. The 4895 load should be +/- 700fps faster and have +/- 10,000psi more pressure.

Makes me wonder in both loads short pressures are close to being the same????
