Well, of course rifles vary from one to another, but the odds are that you will be very pleased. As a breed, Arisakas are very accurate.

My uncle picked up a Model 38 on Guadalcanal that looked almost new. Extremely well made and simple. I shot it in 1968 with my brother and it held under 2" for both of us. We were shooting off hand at about 70 yards using Norma factory ammo, 156 grain if I remember correctly. I really like it and thought as much of it as any mauser I ever owned. Very simple take down on the bolt and the rest of the rifle, no tools needed. The only thing I would have changed was that it was long, 29" barrel and that made it a little heavy, especially with the bayonet attached. I had a 6.5 Jap carbine one time and that little things was a joy to handle. my experience anyway, james

i hunt two t-99,s in 7.7 and with my loads they are 1.5-2" rifles at 100 yards with the original sights.

I have 2 , the 7.7 would ring the gong at 200 yards every shot it is still original , the 6.5x257 I have never shot it has a nice peep mounted to it and a sporter stock , was done before I bought it .

My Type 38 and Type 99 hold up well for accuracy when compared to my Enfield's and Mausers.

If you want match rifle accuracy from a standard military rifle, then the M96 Swedish Mauser and Swiss K31 set the standard.

I have a type 38 that can hold 2" or a little less at 100yards fired from a bench rest. The limiting factor is the sights (for me anyway). All in all my Arisaka shoots as well, or better than most my other surplus rifles. I don't own an M96 or K31, but I've also heard that they are renowned for their accuracy. Maybe someday I'll come across a good deal on one or the other, wishful thinking anyway.

I had a 7.7x58 type 99 sporter that had Remington 700 iron sights. It would shoot the R-P .310" 180 gr CLRN bullet very well in my handloads. Under 2" groups for 3shots at 100 yards. I miss that $18 gun(Police auction). Only Krags and K31s have shot better in my limited experience.

My original Type 99 was my Marine uncle's bring back. I think the rear sight is a bit crude, but functional in a battle rifle. The original question was about Arisaka accuracy. The answer has three parts, in my opinion: First is the gun and Second is the shooter and Third is the ammo.

The answer can only be found at the bench.

Some of the rifles (both types) were liberal in bore diameter.

Tight 99 will be a winner since it is chrome lined.
Every Type 38, except one, that I have seen have barrels that could have had better care in their life.

Short answer . . . shoot em and if they do well ya got a good one.

i have a early type 99 sporter that is chamber to 30-06. i don't what the accuracy is, because its missing the front sight. i have a type 99 front sight ( https://www.libertytreecollectors.co...&idcategory=83 ) but it doesn't fit. it needs like '03 front sight and pin? also i want to do a 311-06, 338-06 or a 9.3x62.

its a japanese barrel. i have to bore slug it, but its probably a .311-313". i cleaned the type 99 up and put in the safe. i think my gunsmith will have a front sight or put on new one. i want a chamber cast, but i'll darned if i can find my cerrosafe.

As many have said, the limiting factor for me is the issue sights (or actually my eyesight) and in my case the absolutely horrible trigger. With my Type 99 I can probably do about 3" at 100 yds, but I feel the gun is much more capable. My bore is very nice BTW.

Both of my 99s have about .315/.316 grooves. One shoots about 2" scoped the other I just got and haven't shot yet. I'm using Hornady .312 150 gr bullets and haven't worked up any loads just a starting load of 4064.

dont know about handloads but i was given a 7.7 about 20 years ago that was in real good shape and some miltary ammo for it and you were lucky to hit a 3lb coffee can at 75 yards.
