Lyman 575387 605gr Roundnose?

I picked up this mold awhile ago and honestly forgot about it. I have a couple 58 caliber muzzleloaders but, this bullet cast out of pure will slide down to the bottom and back out under its own weight. As cast diameter is .574" and weighs 605gr. The lube grooves are the same shape as the hollow base 575213 mold I have.

What the heck is this thing for?

Can I load and shoot this with a patch like I would a .575 round ball?

This is a new one on me. It looks like a solid base from the one photo I can find of it and says it should weigh 575gr. I suppose you can paper patch it if you like. I'm wondering if it was made for metallic cartridge, according to Cartridges Of The World, the .577 Snyder used a .570'' bullet, but weighing less, and the other candidate would be the various .577 Black Powder Express cartridges which should take a .584'' bullet, (photo shows a paper patched bullet of the same round nose profile).

Did you try casting a couple of Boolits with that mold ,using lead with a little Tin in it.

Try that and see if that mold will cast a little bigger

Is this a hollow base boolit or a flat plain base boolit?

EDIT: Sorry Doug - I didn't see the link to the photo. I did find a chart that showed it but it lists it as a 575 grain boolit. We all know that what Lyman says and what it actually weighs can vary - but any chance that your mold was altered from a HB to a solid base? The chart I found does not indicate if it is a HB or PB. Of course if your mold doesn't have a base pin or the blocks altered - then obviously it would be intended to be a plain base.

Does not appear to be altered in any way shape or form looks all factory to me. I don't remember paying much for it. So if it's something to keep on the shelf and not use it's not the end of the world.

I only cast a couple dozen pure lead bullets with it just because I was making some other pure lead conicals.

I did find an interesting article on a paper patching method using two strips of paper at the muzzle forming an X and pushing the bullet down kind of like a sabot. One of my 58s is an in line with a breech plug so I tried seating a bullet that way last night and it looks like an interesting option to at least shoot a couple of them.

Doug - thanks for the info on the mold as far as if it had been altered or was made that way. I'd be interested too - just for curiosity sake - what the mold was designed for. I have shot a lot of rifled muskets and the old standby for them - 575-213 but have never seen the mold like you have.

The paper patching you describe sounds liike it would be a good possibility with it and certainly worth a try to see how it does. If you give it a try - please post ad I would be interested in hearing how it worked out for you.

Have had one for quite a while... planning on trying it paper patched.
My .576 push through sizer came in a while back so perhaps making some up will be a winter project.
The design is a plain base.
Don't have a clue what the mold was originally intended for.

Doug - check Lodgewood Mfg. David usually has them in stock - sometimes required for sizing minie balls to bore size and available in .575, .576, .577 etc.
