wanted to shoot my wife yesterday

there was a sale on whole pork buts for a 1.59 a lb at a store in a town 60 miles from here so i sent her up to buy a 150lbs to make my sausage for this year. Theres a meat packing plant that sometimes sells steaks on the way that has the best steaks in the area but they only sell a limited amount and dont allways have them. She stopped by there and they had rib eyes for a one day only 7.50 a lb. She only bought 10lbs!!! I told her she should have bought 50!! Told her to head back there but figured id call first to make sure they had enough bother making the trip and the lady said we close in 15 minutes and have 3 steaks left.

No more pork buts around here for $0.85 a pound anymore. I guess I am going to have to pay the $ 1.50 + prices if I want to make some sausage this year.

havent seen them around here for under a buck a lb for at least 10 years. Most time they go for 2.50 a lb and i bought some last money at 1.79 and thats about the average sale price around here. 1.59 is as low as ive seen in years.

Last year paid $.79/lb at Freddie's in Atlanta MI called . They have awesome sales. Bit of drive for you...LOL

Currently they are at $1.69 that so $1.59 was a good deal!

BTW, do not try to understand women. If she had found a good price on craft crap she would have bought a couple of totes of junk.

Even at a 1.69 the sausage we make at home is sooooo much better than anything that can be bought. In order to get the same quality it was costing me $7.50 and that was 15 years ago.

I have 2 in the freezer that were $ 0.85 a pound from about 4 months ago. Food is starting to get expensive and hard to get some items. People are starting to stock up on non perishable foods.

Yes, quality of ingredients is huge with me. Years ago when I was looking to buy a grinder the gent at the restaurant supply asked me if I knew what "cushion" was. I had to admit ignorance so he went on to explain. Commercial sausage is NOT mostly meat. The actual % of meat can be as low as 15%, the rest being bone and cushion. Cushion is gotten from the gut pile. If something can be ground up it's pulled from the gut pile and sold inexpensively for use in sausage. It's turned into a sort of paste and no one knows what they're eating. Think bologna and hot dog innards for texture. Of course not all sausage is made that way, but the stuff that isn't is quite expensive. The place I bought my sausage from all those years ago for > $7/lb made it with proper ingredients and no cushion or bone. I go further than he did. I remove the lymph nodes from the pork butt for my sausage. Most people don't and he didn't.

I admit to the occasional cat hair... can't be helped! Ollie has such fine fur it floats on air currents. My hairs I can see, they are 3+ feet long LOL Part of being owned by a cat(humans are staff...)!

My wife makes Iowa-style fur balls.........I mean ham balls.........every Christmastime. With two cats now 100% "owning" our house, it is hard to avoid the occasional feline follicle floating around.

    Arrgh, memories best forgotten!

I had a co-worker who would bring in home canned items. She suggested I try one one day and the hair in the jar was just unbelievable. I never did try it, or ever even acted like I was going to try it. I have no idea if it was her dogs hairs or hers. It was just disgusting.

About 40 years ago I found there was only two ways to keep cats out of the kitchen. One is have no cats in the house, not possible with 2 girls who loved cats. The other was put a screen door on the kitchen entrance, this also keeps rug rats out when grandma is fixing something hot and they could trip her. It works for us!

Since my kitchen is the center of the house with 4 doors leading off it... occasional piece of fur it is. I vacuum daily so it isn't like drifts of fur... I have to to keep my allergies under control... 140 year old dusty house on the main road through town = lots of dust.

whats amazing is we just built a new house. My wife wanted one of those robo vacs that vacuum every day. Its amazing how much dog hair it picks up EVERY day. We have a choc lab and youd think it wouldnt shed like a long haired dog but id bet a get a baseball sized glob of hair every day in it. Cant imagine how much hair was hidden in the old house when we vacuumed maybe once or twice a week and even less under furniture that this thing goes under. I shook my head at buying what i thought was a 400 dollar gimic but the thing really works.

We still see pork butts for $.99 a pound. Kroger or Food City will have them on sale every 4-6 weeks. It usually requires 2-3 trips because the case is usually empty because they sell out. Like to keep 6 on hand for sausage and neighborhood pot lucks.
Perfect ratio of meat to fat for sausage.
