.243 mauser sporter

Just looking for some thoughts. I was at our local gun shop and on the shelf was a well sportorized mauser 98 chambered in .243. It has good rifling, bolt face looked clean, muzzle crown sharp. The wood to metal nicely done. All in all very well done. Askin price is $600. I dont need or even particularly want one, but!!?? Toughts welcomed.

Sounds good, it must not have been used very much.

Fact is, an accurate .243 is as good as anyone who can shoot reasonably well needs for varmints and whitetail deer. (Mine kills deer just as cleanly as my .30-06 or 7mm RM and it pops crows at 300+ yards.)

A full size 98 Mauser action is still the standard of comparision for big game rifles. Only drawback in your case is it's a bit larger/heavier than is really needed for a .243 but that's trivial.

Your rifle's educated market value as a hunting rifle would depend on everything you mention, plus (1) is the action an old military rework OR a better looking and newer commercial action AND (2) who made the barrel AND (3) is there any good quality stock checkering AND (4) what kind of trigger & safety it has AND (5) how well everything is made, assembled and finished.

IF it's all good I'd be taking a very close look at it for $400-$600.

I would be tempted, because I think that everyone should have a 243.

One reason there are a lot of sporterized Mausers out there is that for a good many years, every student in almost every gunsmithing school in the country built a project rifle on those actions. (both surplus and commercial). These rifles are often pretty well built, with good quality barrel blanks, and often quality stock blanks. The wood work will usually show more flaws with a student, simply because it's difficult for an inexperienced beginner.

It would be great if you knew the shop well enough that they would let you shoot the gun before cutting a deal. I have enjoyed that pleasure in the past, and it makes quite a difference in how you feel about both the gun, and the shop. jd

I like the 6x57 Remington better for 98 Mauser actions, but the .243 will do nicely. If it's well put together, it's worth that much nowadays.

my thoughts on "sporterized" rifles of any military brand are. if it has the original floor plate. original trigger and especially a plain wood uncheckered stock; its a $400.00 TOPS "truck gun"

To me ...$600.00 for a sporter is on the high side ... Unless it was done by a pro , carries very nice wood , in a well shaped and nicely checkered stock, with a nice barrel and done on a commerical Mauser action .

If it was done by Bubba on a worn WWII Miltary Surplus action with parts from Herter's and Numrich Arms ... Maybe not . I did a few back in the 60's ...just call me Bubba ... If I got $150.00 for mine it would be a Miracle !

for me if it came home it would pretty well stay for ever even if it done like my 300 Win Mag ultra light, it is a great elk rifle but have not been elk hunting in 15 years but it has a spot in my safe
