Be glad he's "NOT" in Illinois and having to use a Slug Gun. I was 36 when I first got a "Deer PERMIT" in Illinois. Stood up in stand for a hour or so listening to all the shooting and thinking there was no deer on my farm. See a motion and a medium buck is working the field edge. 30 yards or so. He stops with a big birch blocking the shot. I am holding the shotgun pointed. Thinking step forward 1 step and stop. He does. I squeeze the trigger.. He runs off across open field. I think i got him. Wait..walk over.. nothing . no blood. How could i miss. 2 days later i climb back up in junk home made deer stand a guy built. Line gun up for repeat of shot. Looking.. Looking.. Suddenly a limb hanging by a tread comes in focus half way there "ALL MOST SHOT OFF"..............

How many times we see people try to make the kids use a scope. I seen it a hundred times. The deer is at a strange angle to the young hunter. They can’t see through the wonder tube and don’t get a shot. Then discouragement. Congrats to you for giving him the perfect weapon!

That is a precious picture ! When I killed my first deer I had to share the moment with my friends dad as my dad wasn’t a hunter but he let me pursue whatever I wanted. I have grandkids and they grew up to fast and never had much time for hunting even though I sat with 2 of them thru the hunter safety test to get their licenses.
Your son looks like a man ! I would be very proud of him .

They tend to pick 'horses for courses'.
Longer, wide open shots on elk or antelope or mule deer - scopes.
Woods, shorter/quicker shooting - open sights. The impressive thing to me is that they naturally choose what rifle to use!! I cannot take credit for that, I just take them shooting and hunting - they pick their own tool for the day and I don't say anything about it!!
(Other than they have cleaned their packs of anything but the correct ammunition, and that they pick up their brass, and they keep their firearm clean and put away).

This is also my last "first" season. My son shot a small doe in the youth season. Now we're making plans for a buck in the general firearms season next month.

Don't get too worked up, you'll need to prepare for the BEST part of having kids, GRANDKIDS...
As the old saying goes, if I'd know how wonderful grandkids were I'd have had them first" ...just wait it's wonderful.
You have to relinquish that "first" but you might not. I had the same pleasure as you but with my only daughter. That said she gave us three awesome grandsons who I have had a wonderful experience with each. They are now 12, 14, and 19 and we are having a blast fishing, hunting and shooting together.
Otherwise congratulations to all you're clan there, awesome job.
