    Hi guys!... i have a 686 S&W "NO DASH" revolver

    in perfect running order....so does a friend of mine.

    we would like to know when each of our guns were made.

    is there a way to find out?

    Go to the Smith and Wesson forum. There is a lot of knowledgeable people that can tell you. One section of the forum us for more recent firearms.

    According to the Standard Catalog, the 686 no-dash was made from 1980-1986, serial numbers run from AAA-0000 to ~ AVA-XXXX. When a specific frame was made is hard to say, as S&W did not go in strict alphabetical order, nor did they use all of the numbers in every Sequence. Also, ALL revolvers were numbered in this way, thus I have a 624 that is serial numbered "ALW-XXXX" while a 640 prefixed AHD also was made in this time frame.
