    cast boolit sc slick head

i took the 629 to the woods tonight so i could to try out the rcbs 250 keith bullet using 10 grains of unique. shot this sc slick head at 75 yards.she ran about 75 yards with little blood trail even though it was a pass through.i was using range lead with a hardness of about 10bhn. it got the job done but wonder if a different alloy is in order.

Very nice, hoping to get my first handgun kill this year with the Redhawk.

To try to answer your question, it depends. I'm guessing your load is between 1050/1150 fps with a pass through. Can't argue with that.
I can't see the bullet hole, or the angle of the shot, but looks to me like a heart/lower lung. Only you can tell us based on the field dress condition of the heart and lung. If you are happy with the shot placement then the only change I would make is going to 20:1 alloy for more expansion if that is what your after.
My own load, is about the same as yours except I'm running a 14.5 BHN at about the same speed with 4227. The fact that see ran 75 yds should not be a factor unless it is supported by a less than perfect shot placement. Lots of factors enter into how far she ran, damage to the vitals is only one.
Once again, congrats on a 75 yd handgun shot, that takes a cool head and steady hands with a handgun.
Please do respond back on the internal damage, that is good first hand info that any hunter would like to know.

    Good morning and Congratulations !
We are very fond of any Wide Flat Nose for revolvers. The Keiths are fine slugs but a WFN gives maybe 10% more thwap.
Your mix is fine. If you are getting weary of crawling about looking for blood specks slam that same slug into the shoulders. Not much tracking when the motor is only churning on the rear drivers.

Congrats on your success! Appears to be a heart shot, with the blood oxygenated, a deer can cover 75 yards in a couple of seconds.....so, 75 yards covered isn’t really that far! To bring them down faster, it’s almost a must to do a CNS shot or structurally break them down! JMO memtb

With a high shoulder shot OR through the shoulder and most times it will be DRT. Nothing wrong with your shot placement but expect a short run until they run out of O2.

Excellent shot placement. Should be excellent eating. In my experience heart shot deer go further than lung shot deer. Dunno why they just do. I wouldn't worry. Congrats.

Congratulations on getting some meat for the freezer. And a nice buck with a handgun.
I shot a nice buck with a NOE 265 gr WFN my shot was a little higher than yours just missing the heart. The buck ran about the same distance 75-90 yards with zero blood trail. I just tracked him by the kicked up leaves and it was an open woods where he ran. Only a small amount of blood under him where he laid.
I have taken many deer with the Lee 255 gr SW in a sabot from a 50 cal muzzleloader. From what I can remember most of those shot where place thru the shoulder and at higher velocity's.
So as other have mentioned try to break down the shoulder to prevent a long tracking job. There will be far less meat damage with your bullet than with a fast moving rifle bullet exploding and blood shot meat.

Different application. BP has a pressure curve much slower in a longer Mzldr barrel. Getting the same fps in a 6" revolver with pure soft lead might be a recipe for heavy leading in the bore.
