Smoke Yellow Green - Second Try

So I ran a second batch today of Yellow Green for my 9mm boolits. In an earlier post I mentioned the coating looked more transparent, whereby I could see thru the coating to the actual boolit. But, that it was coated and even smash tested good.

I shot some of them this past weekend and barrel had some streaking. It was black, not silver, and one pass of bore snake cleaned both handguns mirror clean. WSF shotgun powder, so it’s dirty anyway. Not sure if it was leading or powder.

Anyway, I ran a new batch this afternoon. I poured out previous powder and cut back on BBs. Added right at 2 teaspoons of yellow green. Did the regular shake and bake per Smokes instructions that did well on my 10mm boolits. Boolits came out looking pretty good, but upon inspection, still a transparent coating. I went ahead and heat treated and water quenched and will try to shoot these in the coming week.

Has anyone else seen where the coating is transparent looking where you can see the lead underneath the coating, like its too light of coating? I’m doing the same thing I did with the Aluminum White for my 10mm and it was fully coated.

Yellow-green, by itself, doesn't coat as evenly as others. Which I think is true for anything trending toward yellow. When I add a touch of Jet Black, it is GREAT. Adding Jet Black to all of the colors I use is pretty much SOP for me. Unsure of the reason, but Jet Black seems to make other colors coat very evenly. Ironically, I don't care for Jet Black by itself.

That’s funny because I do the same thing with jet black. My favorite is jet black mixed with traffic white, for a grey granite look. The traffic white alone didn’t cover real good.

Kind of similar, but one of my favorites is White Aluminum and a bit of Jet Black. Great coverage. One coat. White Aluminum coats well by itself, but is even better with JB.

I just mix about 50/50. More black and they are just a little darker.

I don't measure. Each batch is a bit different. It is probably around 3 to 1.

At this point, quenching is a test. When I fired my first test rounds, the barrel showed ‘streaking’ in both pistols. I couldn’t ascertain if it were lead or powder residue. Using WSF (shotgun powder) it is somewhat a dirtier powder than say 231. I continued to fire and could not see where it was ‘stacking up’ additional deposits. At the end of a 24 per pistol session, I cleaned both barrels with a single pull through from a bore snake. Both barrels came mirror clean.

Being new I was not sure what lead was to look like. I read here where it is silver/grey and it is hard as heck to get out of the barrel. My deposits were black streaks and came clean real quick as previously stated.

It was suggested to me by my mentor to try a harder bullet (quench) as a test to see if possibly the Glock rifling was engraving the bullets slightly due to perhaps a light coating of PC. That’s all.

Black streaks are usually powder fouling, and, as you have found out, will come out easily with good solvents.

Lead does indeed leave a grey streak that can be easily seen and is harder to remove. Light lead deposits will come out with a brush.

Interesting results, that's what makes this site so great. Does anybody have an idea why the addition of Jet Black appears to enhance the coating process? Perhaps Smoke4320 can weigh in? Is the Jet Black powder chemically different than other powders? Either way, I am going to order some from Smoke4320 and give it a try. Thanks to all the posters for the information.
