    Ramshot True Blue Burn Rate

    New Handloader #334 Oct 2021.

In Propellant Profiles Randy Bimson looks at True Blue. He states on page 6 that its burn rate is slower than Bullseye but faster than Unique. In other words, between them but every chart ive found so far shows it slower than Unique and down near Accurate #5.

    Is he incorrect?

I would INITIALLY have said: he is incorrect. Particularly if loaded in the 9mm, where it is sometimes used to make 9mm major loads for IPSC shooters who need 357 power from a 9mm. A powder as fast as Unique would be unlikely to achieve those velocities in a 9mm.

But then I did find this on the RMShot Sight:

RamShot seems to believe that it is close to #5.

I saw that but that is the only chart I've found that lists it in that place.

This chart from ADI puts it next to Number 7 and 800x. TruBlue and the discontinued WAP are the same powder—if memory serves….

It is a best guess based on all the info you can find.

Consider the reason you are using the chart. If you are trying to make an educated guess on a load’s starting point without the benefit of published data, I would assume the chart showing it as a faster powder was the safest assumption to make.

If you have published data for TruBlue, that data is the source you should trust.

If the published data is for Cast,Coated, or jacketed, you can most likely remain safe with any bullet by using the starting load for a particular bullet weight from the data you you have.

Burn rates vary from cartridge to cartridge. The faster powder in a 9mm may not be the faster powder in a 357.

Burn rate charts are only intended to be used as a very rough estimate.

Fortunately, there is enough TruBle data on the Accurate Arms/RamShot/ Western Powders web sight to get you started with most any bullet.

Yes, fastest spot with powder next to it min -10% from those i think

I just find it it odd that Western lists it there but everyone else has it slower

If you google 9mm major, TruBlue, you will get a few posts from the IPSC crowd about TruBlue, and the 9mm. I am relying on memory, but I am pretty sure WAP from Winchester was the same as TruBlue. AutoComp basically took WAP’s market niche in the Winchester line up, after WAP was dropped.

i have used it for medium loads in 357 mag .similar to unique but is cleaner and meters better.

Spoke with Hodgdon (owners of True Blue). They said that 8.0 Western data for its True Blue loads in 357 Mag with 158 gr cast are fine to use and still applicable (I work up slowly over a chronograph). Regarding burn rate we had a discussion which said that True Blue works slower in the longer magnum straight cases (357 Mag) compared to the shorter pistol cases (ie 9mm). I get better velocity with published load data using True Blue compared to Unique in 357 Mag. Unique beats it hands down though in 38 Spl +P 158 gr SWC applications. True Blue’s recoil impulse in 357 Mag isn’t as sharp as Power Pistol at comparable velocities.
