    Small Flat Spring

I have a Stevens pocket rifle. The small flat spring that actuates the extractor is missing. I found a really good picture and measured space for the spring. A friend says it about the same size as the flat springs on a saxaphone. This is a short about 1.36 inches, narrow .1875, no idea how thick, but its not powerful.

Where can you get thin spring stock?

You might try a piece of steel banding it already spring tempered. as width gets wider it gets thicker. Cut out spring and drill if needed. the hard part hardening and tempering is done already.

I would use the blued banding, not the galvanized, and yes I am speaking of the steel straps that hold loads to pallets.

You can also get new spring steel stock from Brownell's. Or reclaim a bit from a wind up alarm clock.

I make lots of Flat springs out of pallet banding steel.
I have also used old Feeler Gauge metal to make flat springs.
Buy a set of steel feeler gauges and you can select the thickness you need.
I use a HF whole punch tool to punch holes if needed rather than trying to drill thru hardened steel.
Infact , I am going to make a flat spring for a muzzleloader patch box like that this week.

If you can find a rewind spring from a junked lawnmower, or a broken clock spring, a little drilling, grinding and filing will get you most functionality in guns short of a mainspring.

Brownell’s sells flat spring stock, but it must be heated and pounded out to get it very thin. And hardened and tempered afterwards. I much prefer operating on something that is already “springy,” if I can get away with it.

Idaho, take a look at McMaster's.
They might have something that will work.

How about a piece of an old windup clock spring? If you can find one these days.

Might I also suggest the spring from a retractable tape measure, some are so very small that very little work is needed. Regards Stephen

Lots of great ideas. Thanks for the help. That's what I like about this site. I have a 6ft narrow tape measure I never use.
