I use sr 4756 for 38 special heavier boolets (158 grns) with good results. The sr was an abbreviation for small rifle ( at least according to Hodgdon when I called them). I also use SR7625, a lot! 3.4 grns under a Lyman 358345,115 grn semi wadcutter. The tec I spoke to at Hodgon I was told that the SR powders were discontinued in 2016. I asked about a replacement for st7625 and titegroup was what was recommended. I didn’t ask about 4856 but I got the Impression that titetgroup would be a good replacement for that too. At least for pistol loads. I’m not overly impressed with titegroup in light loads. I find that it can be dirty if your not filling the case.

After my above post I decided to get out my Lyman 49th edition and check out the low data for SR 4756. Turns out that all the loads I found for rifle or for Cast Boolets! Nothing for jacketed. So I guess Hodgdon discontinued it because I’d boolet casters are an important to them! Lol

..."was" a GREAT powder for turning "Specials" into Magnums....

Was my go to powder for high velocity loads in .38 Special, .44 Special, .38 Super, .45 Colt, .45 ACP and .45 AR...

Only reason I didn't use more of it was cost... It took a little more weight per round (for the same velocity) than Unique and was a lot more expensive per pound.

I believe "SR" was "Sporting Rifle"...

From what I have read AAC-7 is a close replacement for handguns...

And "IMR" is Improved Military Rifle is my understanding of the old Dupont nomenclature.

But I've been wrong before, after all, I am a man.

Yes gentlemen, SR did stand for Sporting Rifle going all the way back to Phil Sharpe and, IMR is
    Improved Military Rifle.

I use SR-4756 for square 16 bore loads. I use sometimes SR-7625 in 44 Spl. and 45 Colt.

Put me in that column that bemoans the loss of SR-4759....

I bought two 8 lb jugs of this powder recently for $15 a lb. I use it in my .41 magnum ruger black hawk and several Milsurps. My 1889 Schmidt Rubin loves 12.5 grains. Meters well and I was glad to pick it up.

I use it in my SAA .44 Spcl. It’s an accurate and powerful load.
