I don't recall the load at the moment, but I was pushing to 2680 fps with my old .223, group ran 1 5/8" at 100 yards with cast bullets. Get up to that velocity range, should take care of your function problems.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!

Well yesterday went both good and not so good. Sighted in the rifle at 25 yards, then moved the target to 100. First 15 cast boolits were high and only a few hit the top of their targets. Those targets were taped across the top of the stand so those groups were lost. Too bad as those were the best A2230 loads from the previous outing.

So, after that lesson I reset the elevation on the scope and pressed on with the oddball powder loads. The ugly (shotgun) cast groups on target 4 and 5 were IMR4227 bumped up to 12.6 and 12.7 grains. After that disappointing session, I moved on to the J-words to see what the rifle was capable of so I left the targets at 100 yards. Center group (1.9") on target #4 was 23.8 grains of IMR4895 behind a Hornady 68gn HPBT. Center group (1.1") on #5 was 22.2 grains of A2520 behind a Sierra 77gn MK.

Going to do more testing with the cast Lee 55s but I think I'll look for a different mold and heavier boolit.
