in past I had chance to acquire an old colt lightning and taurus clone, but did not because I read too much about inherent problems people had with them.
but I wish you the best and looking forward to learning how difficult or easy they might be to work on.
Just wait, a Taurus will explode on it's own!
Check Gunparts, Inc. I think they have a lot of exploded views.
The solid soft lead bullet is undoubtably the best and most satisfactory expanding bullet that has ever been designed. It invariably mushrooms perfectly, and never breaks up. With the metal base that is essential for velocities of 2000 f.s. and upwards to protect the naked base, these metal-based soft lead bullets are splendid.

Forget everything you know about loading jacketed bullets. This is a whole new ball game!
Also, here's an article on the mechanical aspects that may help you further:

Now I lay me down to sleep
A gun beside me is what I keep
If I awake, and you're inside
The coroner's van is your next ride
wondering how you made out with your lightning
there is a colt lightning in 22 rimfire coming up on rock islands oct 6 auction
they say is in excellent condition, very tempting if bidding doesn't go to high
I'm not interested in buying one, but do have a few questions.
Is it a .22 Short or a .22 Long model? I turned down a chance to buy a .22 Long version in the late 1980's, because even then finding .22 Long was getting difficult in shootable quantities.
IIRC Colt never made any in .22 Long Rifle.
