    .257 Roberts suprise

    when out this morning an shot my 257 Roberts model 722
    using J's ...
    same load / powder / primers / cases
    bullets were different....120Gr Speer....120 Gr Nosler partition

    the Nosler consistently shot 2-1/2" higher then the Speer.

    I was surprised at that amount of difference given same them loading.

    THE RANGE WAS 100 YDS
    THE WINDAGE FOR BOTH WAS EXACTLY THE SAME. THE ELEVATION WAS THE ONLY DIFFERENCE

    Maybe the amount of bearing surface is different ?

    Higher's not so bad, to the side really makes holding off odd.

    I had a 243 in a Savage 110 that shot good groups at 100 yards with 90 and 100 grain bullets.
    I tried some Nosler 55 grain spire points. These shot really high velocity and a bughole group at 100 yards. Really impressive. The only problem was, the group was 6 inches to the left of the others.

    2-1/2" difference of elevation for differently constructed bullets is not bad. Having a rifle that stays on a tennis ball at 100yds with different bullet weights makes it a keeper at my house.

    I only own one rifle that will do that.
    Most of mine are set up for one load and bullet size. Nothing else is fired in them other than to test.

    My wife's. 250 Savage has an ER Shaw 1-10" twist barrel full length bedded in a Fajen laminated stock. It will hold that tennis ball sized group with the 75 gr hp@3200 fps to the 120gr @2600fps. It's the only one we have that will do that. I've never shot a tiny group with it- but it is always on target when needed. My "keeper" has a keeper!

    Interesting, my Howa 1500 has an ER Shaw 1:10 barrel in .257 Roberts. It really, really likes 117 grain Sierra Pro Hunters.
    Currently casting and loading: .32 Auto, .380 Auto, .38 Special, 9X19, .357 Magnum, .257 Roberts, 6.5 Creedmoor, .30 WCF, .308 WCF, .45-70.

    The different impact is caused by the vibration of the barrel. If the barrel is at a high point when the bullet clears the muzzle the bullet will strike higher.
