For wiping between shots it takes just the right size jag/patch, a bit loose in the bore, but not so loose the patch remains in the bore Like you noticed, the idea is not to shove all that stuff down the bore, especially not with a patent breech cavity at the bottom. I usually use water and I squeeze out most of it.
