    Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunting/Protection Boolits

Bought me a hand cannon to use on deer and carry in the woods/camping. I have two Lee molds. One is 214gr and the other is a 240gr TL boolit. The 240gr made with wheel weights. I loaded some with 21 gr of 2400 and though they shot somewhat decent, I saw leading in the barrel. I think I saw somewhere that they cannot be loaded to fast. I am not one that needs to have high velocity but I want some penetration snort to them. The 214gr boolit is close to the Keith design SW and I am curious if it would be a better choice giving me moderate velocity with no leading and penetrate through, say, on a deer. I know I'm rambling here but what I'm looking for is input from shooters that have traveled this road and found what works well.

You will need to check your cylinder throats for size. This is easy to do with a cast boolit. My SBH throats are .431" so that is what i size my boolits to. Try some medium loads with Unique or HS 6.

Powder Coating will solve your leading problem.

Happiness is a Warm GUN & more ammo to shoot in it.

My Experience and My Opinion, are just that, Mine.

If the bullets can be pushed through all the cylinder holes with easy to medium hand pressure using a bic pen then they are correctly sized for the cylinder.

I agree with powdercoating it is a very durable coating. It's like making your own jacketed bullets.

Check the bullets don't fall through under their own mass(too small), and they don't get stuck impossible to pass (too big).

    You want just right.

A Super Blackhawk, I'm guessing in .44 mag right?

For deer, you don't need full magnum loads.

Do as instructed above, checking the throats & bore diameter. Match the cast bullets to that. Plus,, powder coating, as mentioned,, is an excellent direction as well.

My general guideline for a good cast bullet,, for hunting,, is a quality cast solid SWC design, moving between 1000 & 1200 fps is ideal. Just experiment with things to find ACCURACY and comfort in that range.

Lee C430-310-RF and don’t look back. Didn’t have a Ruger Hawk that wouldn’t shoot it. And you don’t have to run it all out to kill.
I'll be needing that for squirrels and such.....
