That kind of recoil is definitely in my past, not my present or future. I injured both wrists in a cycling accident and the resulting soft tissue damage means I am limited to 44 magnum and down. In fact, anything over 265 grains in the 44 is too much of a good thing for me.

I suspect it would kick less violently if shot off hand. I also suspect that it is much easier to make long-distance shots braced off of the legs. Does the barrel cylinder gap eat holes in your pants knees? I'd be very interested in using a piece of leather or an old mouse pad to protect my leg if I was shooting like that. How far were you shooting? And what are you shooting at? That's awesome that you get to do that.

What load, and velocity? I would bet it is way over 900 fps.

Just bought the same basic gun in a FA 83 in .500 Wyoming Express with an extra .500 JRH cylinder...I'm keeping my loads to the 1000 fps range however...

that load pushed a 450 lfn to about 1150 out of the 4inch barrel. A bit more can be squeezed out of it but thats the load that particular gun liked more then any other. Hard to explain the recoil. Yup theres surely some there but its a slow recoil. Not the sharp fast recoil an 475 or 454 has. To me the 475 is harder to master. But that said ive watched a 18 year old girl sit down with us that had never shot a handgun before and shoot two cylinders of that same load and was giggling and wanted more. As to enduring it. Recoil has never physically hurt me. Well i guess to be honest i did wear the sight blade of my 475 in my forehead one day with FULL power loads but that was because I got to lacks after shooting a bunch and just wasnt holding the gun well enough. Recoil is 90 percent mental. Heavy recoiling guns are usually bashed by people who dont shoot enough to get over the mental thing and most of them consider 44 mag a workout to shoot. Anyone that can master a 44 mag and actually shoot it well can handle a 500 with some range time and slowly working up to it. I always tell people Ive owned one gun that was painful to shoot and that was a 44 special 396 smith. it weighted 18 ounces and would make the web of my hand bleed! Id rather shoot 50 of those 500 loads then a cylinder full of 44 specials out of that gun shooting a 250 ahead of 18 grains of 2400.
its no louder then a 44 mag. Its higher pressure loads that make the noise. compared to something like a 454 that is a real noise maker. Most of the 500 linebaugh loads you will find on the internet and from john dont go much over 25000 psi where a 454 is probably double that and even a 44 mag is much higher.
no you hold the gun so that the cylinder gap is past your legs and even so the cylinder gap on something like a linebaugh built 500 is half the gap that a ruger has.
lucky you didnt tell me that 20 years ago. funny thing is ive shot MANY thousand 500s 475s and 454s and other big bores and that monkey never sat on my shoulder. I know people that flinch shooting 22s. Like is said its a mental thing more then a physical. If you look at it and tremble your going to flinch.
Well Lloyd, not many can handle that kind of recoil and hit well. Good on you for being one who can. I can manage .44 mag and .357 hot loads in full size guns but I choose to shoot mostly medium loads. A 275 gr. boolit going 1175 out of my Super Blackhawk is one I can shoot well all the time.
