    Wild Mushrooms...

    Hello All:

Anyone here pick wild fungi for the plate?

I am always on the lookout for edible mushrooms when I am hunting or scouting. As a rule this time of year the chicken of the woods are out but in all my haunts they are absent. This mushroom when cooked right does taste a tad like chicken breast.

Another one I look for is maitake or hen of the woods. Again for some reason they aren't out where I have found them in the past.

I have noticed quite a few poisonous ones. We are having a wetter than normal late summer. I figured that there would be an abundance of edible mushrooms but it seems to be not the case.

We forage morels, oysters, chanterelles, Sulphur chicken, hen of the woods, and pheasant backs.

We got a bucket full of chicken of the woods on Sat while walking the woods. Fried up a bunch for a late breakfast and yesterday for dinner.
Hopefully the hen of the woods come out this year. Last couple have not been so good for them around here.

Hunting wild mushrooms used to be one of my favorite hobbies.
I will still stop and pick them if I see them from the road.
Vandalism of parked vehicles in this area has gotten completely out of hand and I will not leave my vehicle unattended along our logging roads now.
I used to find chanterelles, corals, Shaggy manes, boletes, and morels.
We like them pan fried with a buck steak.
My wife makes some awesome cream of mushroom soup.
A grilled cheese and cream of wild mushroom soup make a great cold weather meal.

Of Czech decent (both sides ), mushrooms, while growing up, were more than a regular, staple part of our diet! Sadly, I only know their names in the Czech language (Bohemian), but my rule of thumb was to only pick those without the umbrella shape and ridges beneath -- albeit some of this type my mom and dad picked were quite delicious. A phonetic pronunciation of my favourite is "Jhe-bee" -- with the "Jhe" rhyming, say, with "She", but with the "j" sound.
Albeit I do believe my mom liked my present wife (#3 for me), she regularly told her to pick and serve me POISON mushrooms if/when she ever wished to "off" me... "Gosh, officer -- I feel ever so terrible -- I could have sworn they were safe 'rooms!".
Since... I regularly eat mushrooms -- but only FROM THE SUPERMARKET!!!

Here's a couple of giant puffball mushrooms i.found last week. Made pizza crust out of them and pan fried some in eggs and crackers. Had a post on them if you check back.

I sliced mine up, oiled both sides, salt and pepered, and baked till brown on both sides. I then froze my baked slices. I would assume you can dehydrate them
    as well.

    Sliced up...

The round slices are after baking...

The bottom ones were pan fried in egg and flour.

I'm sire you could vacuum seal the slices. I just slid them all into a zip loc bag and froze.

Pizza I made using a round slice as crust. Reminded me of a gooy rocky rococo pizza crust.

Other than morels and giant puff balls I don't know my edible mushrooms.

Nice images of mushrooms. Like I posted it seems to be a bad year for mushrooms in Massachusetts. Well. Maybe the part I live in.

Unfortunately with no training I have absolutely no confidence in my ability to know what is safe and what is not - so I don't try.

Morels are easy and very hard to make a mistake. Also the tastiest wild mushroom!

Back in the 1960's I had some friends who liked to pick what they called "Magic Mushrooms" ...
but they didn't eat them ... boiled them in water and drank the Magic Mushroom Tea ...
Then they went places ... they called it "taking a trip " . My Room mate didn't believe what they were telling us ... and drank some ... that old boy was " away from home" for several hours ...
That little trip scared the Bejezus out of him ... freaked me out just watching him !

    The wonders of Mushrooms !
Be careful what you pick !

I only trust myself to collect chanterelles. In my area nothing looks like'em. Wish I knew more. I have heard of some people foraging them but don't know any of them. Would love to tag along

I worked a surveying job for several summers while in school. Mushroom hunting at lunch meant we’d hear some pretty good stories days later.
